I'm using the latest 6.1.0.447 SD+AV (fully updated) on vista ultimate 32bit sp2 also fully updted. Seem to have a problem with this 6.13030-6.13040.exe in C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\avdb

This is run from WININIT.EXE to SERVICES.EXE to PCTSSVC.EXE and is a patch application.

When this runs spyware doctor locks up and the only way to restore things is to stop the exe in task manager. This has happened a few times now.

Here's a screen shot of that folder.

I get this message on stopping the exe in task manager:

Did you upgrade or clean install?

You might want to check your SD/AV settings and save any custom settings, uninstall SD/AV, delete the \program files\spyware doctor folder, re-install and see if that fixes it.

Clean install or upgrade?

Neither SD has been on the pc for a while 6months, i guess it was just doing an update, though it had just done one a few minutes before automatically without a problem, i checked by doing a manual one it said it was up to date.

Now the process was stopped the exe is gone from that folder and the C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\avdb\temp folder is full of files that weren't there before.

I'm going to empty the temp folder and try an update see what happens.

Ok i disabled behaviour guard then shut down SD+AV then deleted the files then restarted SD+AV. It then did an auto update and said it was sucessful. I did a manual one it said it was upto date then shortly after the 6.13030-6.13040.exe has kicked in again and is running. I minimised SD to the taskbar now i have problems opening it again...or anything.

6.13030-6.13040.exe is using no cpu but some memory 1900kb.

Is this something to do with vpatch.exe running from _ir_vp2_temp_0 in windows temp i wonder??

Yes it is I think this can be resolved if PCTools use a digital signature on the vpatch.exe file....

Something odd happened.

I'm going to empty the temp folder and try an update see what happens.

If that does not work, try my prior suggestion. Important to delete the \PF\sd folder.

I edited my earlier post while you were replying, its the vpatch.exe file that is unsigned that sometimes caused the error, all that needs to be done is for them to sign their files.

Edit
you may not encounter this on xp tbh i think its more likely to be related to it being vista re UAC etc.

Also I have been testing KIS2010 suite. Which was disabled. re-enabling its firewall meant i could find where the error was as it identified the unsigned exe running from the windows temp folder.

From some other threads it seems that other firewalls seem to have this issue with it also and its a known issue that will be fixed, but as i said i imagine just signing the exe may well resolve it.

Hi Lucid,

The patch file is being signed as of our current release policy, however, the patching mechanism has been reviewed and will be upgraded in the next release.
