I'm not sure if this is where this goes, but I have to put it somewhere.

I have Windows 98 (yeah, total dinosaur computer, but it's the best I could afford!) I put the computer together like Frankenstien's monster, and whenever I startup my computer, Windows starts to load, but then says: "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set-up program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. C:\Windows\System\VMM32\enable.VXD Press a key to continue." When I hit a key, it repeats. I tried getting into DOS and renaming the system.ini and copying it, to no effect.

Please help!!! I really need to use my computer!

Try this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/165454

If that does not work, try this:

The command structure is like this:
extract d:\win98\win98_53.cab enable.vxd /l c:\cccc
All on one line, where d is the letter for your CD drive and c:\cccc is the full path name to the place you want to put the file.

The /l is lower case L (not 1).

:( That's for Windows 95, and it assumes Windows will load all the way, which mine doesn't. But thank you SO MUCH (hug) for that.

Okay. I'll try that. ^_^ I'll be back tomorrow, and I'll let you know if there's still a problem. Thank you!!
