Hi all,
I saw this problem in various posts but need a very basic step by step instruction of how to fix. I am not a "computer geek" and am new to Vista.
Synopsis:
I just bought a new computer. Aspire X3200 using Vista Home SP2
It came with McAfee virus scanner which I did not like and found very annoying so I uninstalled it and decided to install my Spyware Dr which I used on my old XP computer. When installing it told me I needed to disable a few things from my Windows defender which I clicked yes go ahead and disable. Once installed it auto started an intelliscan. When that finished it told me again a scan was not done and I needed to scan. I did this 3 times before I gave up. I tried to run and auto update and it froze and then restarted itself to begin a scan again. Again after the scan it tried to tell me I needed to start the scan again. I stopped it and tried once again to auto update. No go. So I decided to reboot hoping this solves the problem.
It took a long time to shut down. Then on start up it froze. I never got to the password log in. It just kept saying please wait. I decided perhaps it is still trying to install so watched a movie while I waited. My computer rebooted itself once in the meanwhile yet never managed to produce my login screen just hung at please wait. I tried booting in safe mode and ended with the same issue. It hangs at login reboots itself and then hangs again.
I eventually just restored from a backup and got back into my computer. But I am a sucker for punishment and tried again. This time manually turning off my firewall, and Windows defender. Now I have tried 3 times and 3 times have had to use a backup restore point to get back into my computer
Same thing happened. I cannot seem to get Spyware Dr to work. I am not able to tell you what version I was using as it is now uninstalled having used a restore point from before installation. But I downloaded from here: www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/
I can tell you I was using Spyware Doctor (6.0.0.386)Database version: 5.11331 on my old XP machine according to what is on an old scanned Email
My computer:
Vista Home basic (6.0Build 6002)
32 bit
Memory (RAM) 3.00 GB
I am not running any other virus scanner etc
Any suggestions as I really like this product and have been using it for years. I just do not know enough of computers to figure out all the little things that are going buggy with my installation. It appears something is not compatible but I just don't know what. I am not a computer geek but am fairly competent and know my way around & where to find things. I am new to vista which is handicapping me a bit :( I am rather tired of having to use a restore point to get back into my computer after a reboot.
I did read about turning on kernel compat. mode but am not sure what that is. I am afraid to install again as this keeps happening over and over.
When installing is there something I need to deactivate/activate in SPDr so it works with windows defender?
Please help
