You may want to try uninstalling, removing \program files\spyware doctor, reboot and re-install

hi haapy,

tried that. no luck! the initial update once clean install was performed went fine... the subsequent updates crashes my system, every single time...:(

is there any way to manually update the database?

I think that manual load is somewhere on the forum, must search.

In the meantime, try the smart update in safe mode.

If safe more didn't work check post 4 or this thread.

I notice that you have eset security. I wonder if it is possible that there is a conflict?

Can you temporarily disable those components and try the smart update?

disabled eset, same results pctsTray.exe error as well as pctsGui.exe error the moment smart update starts... then all running apps start crashing one after the other...

Sorry then, I am out of suggestions.

I think that achen will have to look into this one.

Are you using the free SD or the paid for version? He might need to know that.

paid version... all was fine before the vista sp2 update... eset and SD played along fine ;)

Well maybe one more.

If you ever have had Norton or McAfee installed, you may want to try the removal tools available on the respective web sites.

I have seen weird issues that were fixed by running the tools.

thanks haapy,

mcafee came preinstalled on my system, removed it with revo uninstaller... will try the uninstall tool and see if it solves the problem...

Hi Surferosa,

Are you getting any error messages on each update? or is the computer freezing? What screen do you get to before the crash? Does the Smart Update window pop up?

hi anthony,

nope, no error messages. the smart update screen opens up and then everything freezes. then all the running applications start bombing out, one after the other... sometimes there are error messages from pctsGui.exe as well as pctsTray.exe.

i'm going to try a clean install again and update with eset disabled... will also deactivate the threatfire plug-in...

Is this on a 32 bit or 64 bit Vista?

surferosa

32 bit. have done a clean install with behaviour guard disabled, so far so good... was able to update without any problems...;) will post if any changes occur during the course of the day.

That's good to hear :) Do let us know if it does return.

Hi all, i too had the same thing as surferosa. I have vista sp2. I too found that removing behavior guard solved this. I can only assume that this plug-in must be causing this particular problem. This in itself isn't a major issue as i now have threatfire installed instead of behavior guard and the problem doesn't occur. I then uninstalled threatfire and added behavior guard through my account again the test and yes the problem returned. Perhaps this is something PCTools can look into. This maybe a shot in the dark but windows recognizes behavior guard in the security center but not threatfire as the setting for this is turned off in the settings for threatfire. Maybe there is a conflict with behavior guard and eset?

Hope someone will find this useful,

Regards,

matt:)
