I've been having issues with Avast so thought seeing as I'm running paid versions of other PC Tools products I'd give the Anti Virus a shot. Totally uninstalled Avast, loaded PCT AV did an update. tried to scan and the processor went up from abt 4% before hitting the scan button to 100% and stays there locked up. Task Mgr says PCT AV not responding and won't scan.:(

Hi Silvertones,

Can you try running PCTAV in safemode with networking and see if you get the same problems?

Both Avast and PCTAV on-demand scanners will grab plenty of CPU cycles when they can, especially noticeable on a PIII, but 100% is not normal.

Did you try temporarily changing "Scan Archives" to "Off" in the "Settings" > "Scan Settings" section?

Anthony,
I'll give that a try. It may take a couple of days as I had to uninstall PCTAV and reinstall Avast. BTW the Avast scan does not run up the processor to 100%.
