Hi everyone,

I recently posted another thread about a pretty neat web page which Comcast created that details how to secure Windows XP. Here is the thread:

I came across this fairly good XP security guide... (http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56691)

Anyway, one of the utilities which Comcast recommended is:

Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/)

I tried it and it is slick. It reported the insecure versions of the old Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (full version, not just the reader) which I had installed long ago on my Win98 box before I upgraded the box to XP Pro. It also told me that I needed to update Flash and a couple of other programs.

Well, after uninstalling Adobe Reader 5.0 and installing the most recent versions of the other software which Secuna said needed to be updated, now Spyware Doctor runs much faster! I am pretty sure that the problem was due to the DLLs associated with the old Adobe Acrobat 5.0 slowing the system down, or at least slowing SD down when SD tried to examine all of the system hooks which the old Adobe DLLs used.

So, lesson learned. Dump really old programs which you don't use, or at least see if there are much more recent updated for those old programs.
