Please help - keep losing programs!

I keep randomly losing my program listings from start >programs... even the administration icons disappear.

This happens at different times. I have vista utlimate 64bit with AVG 8.5 and spydoctor.

I have reinstalled vista now 5 times on 2 different HD's but after using it for a couple of hours it freezes then all the menu items disappear.. so I can't go to dos prompt or carry out a system repair.
If I reboot the PC is loads with blank screen with no programs in the start location
Can any help me sort this out.. I don't think its a IO failure as the system still runs...

Have I got some sort of rootkit ? I carried out a full scan with AVG and Kasparsky and found nothing?

I am assuming that you have the latest version of Spyware Doctor v440. and that it is NOT Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus.

You can eliminate any hard disk issues but running the Hard Disk Error check.

You are going to have to google search for an anti-rootkit solution for Vista 64. Do you have the scan for rootkits selected with SpywareDoctor options?

You did not indicate that you scanned with Spyware Doctor, if not do a full scan.

I have the lastest version of spydoctor, I've ran a full scan and found nothing.

I had the same problem. I'm restoring from a backup now. I had no problems with the beta and now this!

Have you all searched Microsoft's web site about this problem. I recall that Win98 had this problem if the ShellIconCache file was corrupted. Maybe something similar is occuring with Vista?
