View Full Version : Whats the deal with the Mar 12 SD version?

Hi everyone,
I downloaded and tried the initial release of SD 6.01.440 which was released in February. Today I just downloaded the March 12 release of SD, and I am about to try it. Yet I note that under Properties it says that its version also is 6.01.440. But I also note that this latest download is 23MB versus the 17.7MB download of the February version.
So, am I correct in assuming that this latest March 12 version includes a bunch of fixes for various problems even though this March 12 version supposedly also is version 6.01.440?
I want to give this latest download a try, but I kinda would like to know if it really is a patched 6.01 version before I take the time to fully back up my computer before trying it.
:)

Hi
As far as I know there are no internal changes to Spyware Doctor (so no fixes). The installer may now include an optional Trial installation of another PC Tools program (like Registry Mechanic) which would account for the size change.
Hope that helps

Mjq424 is on the ball with this one. The SD released on the 12th of March includes an option to install RM, which is why this release is slightly larger than the previous version. We also included some minor bug fixes.

Are the minor bug fixes worth downloading and re-installing?
Hate doing so when everything seems to be running fine (except for the phantom ignored infection)
thanks

I hope that it has the bugfix for booting up if you are using Acronis True Image drive backup software and have an Acronis hidden partition on the drive. That was the reason why I had to revert back to SD .386.

Take a look at Macrium Free. Seems a lot simpler to use, and of course it is free. If you ever decide to dump Acronis there are some specialized things to do to get rid of the Acronis drivers.

I asked Achen about it. Minor changes, but if you want to stay current, it is recommended to go for it.

I updated to the march 12 on my lap top. Did an intelli scan. Took a bit over 4 minutes; before i updated the intelli scan took 2 minutes and 10 seconds or so.
Why the change?
thanks

Help help help
Really irritated.
I didn't do a clean install.
So this time I uninstalled sd
and then did a clean install with the march 12
Well, computer totally slowed down. When sd finally came back everything crawled. And, it said i was running the free trial version rather than capture my registration number. Fortunately I had registration number on other machine so manually typed it in and machine was registered (hope this does not count as my third machine; I only have two registered.
And, now I just rebooted the machine it booted fine and then said to install some of the sd stuff it had to do another reboot.
i seem to be in an endless cycle and out one laptop for the moment. Was just going to test to see if scan with clean install was faster
sd finally opened and I went to set kernel compatibilitymode.. it is slow as molasses as if something is running in background.
Should have left well enough alone.
Help

Lessons learned.
The following is a bit tedious, but better to be safe than sorry. Here is what I suggest:
It sounds like you have the paid for version installed. Uninstall it with Revo. Make sure to delete \program files\spyware doctor if it exists.
Run CCleaner file clean and registry clean (run the registry clean multiple times until no errors.
Run Registry Mechanic if you have it.
Re-boot
Re-install the free version and immediatly uninstall it with Revo. Make sure to delete \program files\spyware doctor if it exists.
Run CCleaner file clean and registry clean (run the registry clean multiple times until no errors.
Run Registry Mechanic if you have it.
Re-boot
Re-install the paid for version and see how it goes.
If this does not work, you will have to PM Achen.
Good luck.

There is something definitely going on since I updated my system with the latest 23mb update. My Intelli scan which use to take 3mins now takes 8mins and a full scan takes 75mins compared to 32mins!! I have not added any additional programs to my system.I have read that RM was incorporated into this updated, as I already have a registered version of RM on my comp would this be affecting my system?

I've got the same thing going on as Aussie Dave, longer scan times and the computer is starting to lag also. I already have a registered version of RM on the computer also. Looks like this started on the last update.

I just uninstalled SD and re-installed SD on my computer. That didn't solve the problem, still have long scan time and lag on the computer. :(

thanks haapy.
Before you posted, i simply uninstalled and reinstalled typed in the numbers and hoped. Apparently it is working. the intelli scan on my laptop vista business no other security software took almost twice as long. So I ran the full scan It took roughly the same amount of time (maybe a minute longer) than it did before.
I think part of the initial installation screw up was sd seemed to take forever to download the updates that occur when you install and someone needed to do that a couple of time. A bet a server hiccuped.
Anyway, laptop appears to be okay and I'm going to wait a while before making any changes on my main machine.

ad, ptd, ttb,
I don't know what to say. I will PM achen with this post and have him take a look at it Sunday PDT afternoon. Hang in there till then.
I also have problems that seemed to start with the 6.0.1.440 upgrade. Scan time is slow- SD lags: in Task Manager it shows as "not responding" for intervals during operations.
As well history file is not recording any events, it seems since the date of the upgrade.
Can I uninstall SD and folders, then reinstall without any registration issues?

I just checked my history file on the desktop (march 9th install of 440) and the scan times have gone up substantially in the last week or so. Almost double the time in the intelli scan and 20-25% increase in time for the full scan. I hadn't noticed it before until i put up the maRCH 12 440 on the laptop, but the increased scanning time seems not to have anything to do with the early build or the 12th build but something else that has changed in the last week or so.
No software changes on the computer, and only trivial additions of small word processing files.
Major change took place on march 25th with update done around 8 a.m. that day midwest usa time

I installed the latest version 6.0.1.440 of SD on my Win/XP Pro SP2 system. I also use an automated backup tool called Storegrid from Vembu. It runs every day and backs up all my active partitions. Since the .440 version of SD my backups are taking up to 11 times longer (depending on partition) - i.e. hours instead of minutes. I've got an Excel chart that shows the difference.
If I stop SD before the backups kick in, the backups run normally.
Also, I have noticed that TFService.exe is active along with Storegrid and the two add up to close to 100% CPU. I have never installed Threatfire but believe it installed with this latest version - is that correct?
The system crawls, is not responsive to any other activity like opening a new app. Starting Firefox may take 5 minutes to come up, for example. Screen refresh take minutes. It is really painful.
I would like to get some advice on this because it is useless running things the way they are now.
Thanks
Lloyd

I had a similar situation here, running Vista Ultimate. I uninstalled SD a couple weeks ago, and am waiting for an updated version to try it again.

Just did a Intelli-scan with the 386 - 5.5 minutes. Scan time on 440 - 7.5 minutes. :confused::confused:
Just as haapy posted: Hang in there till later today until AChen looks at this, it may be a bad update. :)

Same here. My previous experience is often SD will slow down the pc whenever there is a major product update. This problem usually happens when I just upgrade existing version without uninstalling it first. If it happens, the solution is to uninstall SD and reinstall again. But this time, I have tried twice still couldn't solve the issue.
Before SD update, my pc is completely boot up in 2.5 minutes. After 6.0.1.440 update, it takes around 12-13 minutes. During startup, my pc like hang and the programs load in extremely slow motion.
I found that the issue is with the IntelliGuard. Everything will back to normal if you disable it during startup (Pick deactivate for 5 minutes) and enable it again after the pc is completely up.
My PC spec:
Windows Vista Home Basic SP1
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHZ
4GB Ram
Intelli-scan is about 7-8 minutes.

Here is an update to my previous message.
I figured I should try updating Windows to make it current - my previous message came from a Win/XP Pro SP2 system. So today I updated to SP3 and all other relevant Microsoft fixes.
I then waited for my backup application to run along with Spyware Doctor. Well, I no longer have a 100% CPU problem. Now my system is spending huge amounts of time in wait (System Idle). The backup gets dispatched every so often but the majority of time the PC is in wait. Unfortunately, the effect is the same my backups are still taking huge amounts of time but the CPU is not busy.
After an hour of backing up one partition and getting to 40% complete, I decided to shut SD down. The backup picked up immediately and now is running much faster. Can't say it's as good a before but it is a lot better.
Can you say "W-i-e-r-d".
Hope this extra info. helps you.
Thanks
Lloyd

Hello,
Is there any way to to download the old 17 MB executable file of SD+AV? I just downloaded the 23MB file but after reading all these issues, I would like to stay with the old. Too bad I overwrote the old executable file with the new one without reading this post. If anyone has the old version of the executable pls help.:(
And I agree that Threatfire was installed without informing me. I never purchased it. It takes quite a lot of cpu resources, if process explorer is to be believed.

Downloaded the updates this a.m. about two hours ago and computer did its intelliscan. Back to the 3 minutes rather than the 6. I'll wait for the scheduled full scan this afternoon to see if full scan has returned to normal time but I'm optimistic that haapy was right; something silly with downloads that was corrected.

Threatfire in the form of Behavior Guard comes with Spyware Doctor with Antivirus and is free with the product. It is a worthy tool to have. You can check you other addins by going to My Account. If you do not know how to do that, there is a sticky in this forum.
I also recommend staying th course with the current version. PCTools is pretty good about fixing things is rather short order.

Looks like all the scans are back to normal. Intelli-scan on 440 - 3 minutes. Full scan W/ archives & Rootkit enabled about 70 minutes. Thanks PC Tools for the fix! :D

I tried running smart update but it says that my product is up to date. :(
Just to let you know, my product version is: 6.0.1.440 and database version is: 6.12070. Is it okay?

That is the latest DB :)
SDwAV 6.0.1.440, db ver 6.12110
When I checked history I see two lines that I have never seen before:
Full screen started
Full screen finished
I checked history in a second computer that runs .440 and it doesn't show that.
What is this?

I got this from SD Guide:
"Enable Full-Screen Detection: When checked, Spyware Doctor will detect when your computer is in full-screen mode. Pop-ups are suppressed during this time and only displayed when you've exited full-screen mode."
I get the same everytime I play a game on the computer. It looks like it stops the pop-ups when you are playing a game or in full screen. :)

Thanks. I now see that it's under the What's New in This Version section. I was puzzled because I look at the history file every day and I have never seen this msg before. But .440 has only been installed on that computer for a few days.
And that section also reminded me of the new right click to scan a file/folder/flashdrive feature in this new version. Very handy.

Still getting lags and 100%cpu often with pctsvc. Had to disable threatfire service
behaviorguard and shutdown SD with AV all together until its fixed.
I never had this happen before the update that caused 6 reboot red flags in a row.
I cant use a program where I need to shut it off to browse.

When BG was disabled, did this help?
Could you elaborate on the update issue? Did the reboot notification stop after 6 reboots? do you have EG and SG enabled? Could you try disabling EG in MyAccount to see if this solves the reboot issue.
Also, do you have any other security programs installed?
