I have 25% framentation (red) all in the freespace area at bottom of the graph. I tried Free Spce Consolidation but after 12 hours only 4 or 5 (out of ~120?) green tic-marks of the progress bar at top has occurred (one below it is stationary at halfway mark), and my PS fan goes full force for the whole time. Is there something wrong, or should I try it again. At the same rate, it could take DAYS.

Thanks.

My guess is that your hard drive is formatted with FAT32 partitions. With most disk defragmenter programs, you must be using NTFS partitions so that the defragmenter program can work in real time to degragment the drive. If your hard drive is formatted with FAT32 partitions, try booting into Safe Mode and then running Disk Suite to defragment the drive.

If it is Fat32, you can convert it.

First of all it will be useful to know base characteristics of HDD used, such as capacity, available free space, type of file system. Best way is to provide screen-shot of Disk Suite with Report dialog after Defrag Analysis, like two screens attached to this post.

For the first one we have:
16GB. Used >50%. Fragmentation 6%
Consolidate Free Space takes 55:00 min
1629

For the second:
5GB. ~30% used. Fragmentation 80%
Consolidate Free Space takes 16:00 min
1630

If volume has too low free space available, then defragmentation time can increase significantly.
Also Free Space Consolidation can slightly increase overall fragmentation value.
