I have an old system and wanted to install windows 98 on it so I can use it for minor things like internet browsing and what not. I seem to be running into a problem though.

My friend gave me a Windows 98 cd-rom to use and when I put it in it asks me to...

1)Boot from hard drive
2)Boot from CD

I choose #2, boot from CD

Then I get prompted again and I choose

1) Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM

this is where I run into the problem

I get a

Not ready reading Drive A
Retry, Abort, Ignore, Fail?

I try Ignore so I can move on but then it says

The windows 98 setup files were not found.

After that it shows

A:\

so I guess I need to get it to "D:\" so I can run setup from the disc or something correct?

But when I type D:\ or just D: and hit enter, I get an Invalid drive specification error, so I'm really lost and don't know what to do...Any help would be greatly apprectiated.

Hi Nightfly,

Did your friend give you a CD for Win98 or for Win98SE? And, whichever one, is the CD for the Upgrade or does it say OEM?

PM me for additional help.

Cool thanks, will take a read right now.

It's Win98SE and it says OEM and nothing about it being an upgrade.

Alrighty. What you need is the floppy boot disk which came with the Win98SE OEM CD.

Ah shucks, IIRC, the floppy drive on the old system is not working properly, and my friend didn't know it came with a floppy disk, so he is looking for it right now.

Well, I went on google and looked up some stuff concerning this and found a site bootdisk.com, I guess I can download the one for Windows 98SE OEM and see if it works right? Just got to find a floppy disk, I guess the local Staples store should have them.

Is putting it on a floppy the only way? Maybe it's possible to put on a USB drive and load it like that?

Pull the floppy drive out of the computer, open it up, dust it out, and then carefully clean its drive heads with ear swabs and isopropyl alcohol. The drive most likely will work fine when you reinstall it.

Hmm...I never thought to try the USB drive idea. The only way I can think of to get that to work is if the computer has the ability to boot from a USB drive.
