Good day, I just spent a few hours troubleshooting why my Macbooks fan was racing at 6200 rpm, and why my CPU was pegged at 100% usage, and my temp was at 210 deg F.

Last night, I had received the iAntiVirus update notification that version 1.3 was available. I installed it and than went to bed later.

I woke up this morning with my Macbook at 210 deg F, and all hell broken loose. It was making the whole system very slow, jerky, and overheating.

After searching all over the net, about why the syslogd process would eat 100% of CPU, and going down all kinds of dead-ends, it became apparent that system.log was abnormally huge in size.

I used the Activity Monitor and Console to troubleshoot , and saw that my "system.log" file was the culprit, and it had grown to 123 mb instead of the usual 10-80 kb of the other log files.

By looking at the text in the system.log file, I noticed that there was thousands if not millions of recent entries for iAntiVirus in there. So I uninstalled iAntiVirus, and everything went back to normal.

I used Time Machine to install version 1.1 and everything is great, and I also installed 1.2 and it also works great and I have no more symptoms.

I am using your latest version, 1.32, and just now I had the same problem where your process was chewing up 98% of the CPU (I used the unix command line commant "top" to determine this). Is there a fix available ?

1. What other software you have running/installed on your Mac
2. The model of your Mac
3. The output of the top command, OR
4. whether it is syslogd or iavd using up your CPU time
5. Did you originally install v1.32 or did you have another version and then Smart Updated to 1.32

Please tell us:

NeoOffice, Pando, SuperDuper, AppleWorks6, UTC Display X, all the Apple "iApps", NetNewsWire, Eudora, Adium, Firefox, Safari, MT- ewsWatcher. That's just for a start, I have dozens of other software I run as well. Nothing other than the operating system was running when this CPU problem happened.

2. The model of your Mac

MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM,
running the very latest MacOS with all of the patches applied.

3. The output of the top command, OR

FYI, this happens randomly. I killed the process and restarted iAntiVirus
and it runs for a while with no problem.s

4. whether it is syslogd or iavd using up your CPU time

iavd, NOT syslogd

5. Did you originally install v1.32 or did you have another version and then Smart Updated to 1.32

I too have had the same problem on the two Macs that I installed iAntiVirus on. I have had syslogd use 100%+ of the cpu on both machines slowing the machines to the point of being unusable. A forced rebooting did not help, but running applejack at least temporarily fixed the problem. I also had iavd use 100%+ CPU on my machine, but I was able to quit iAntivirus and the process stopped immediately and neither problem has returned.

My Mac is a Mac Book Pro
2.16GHz C2D
3 GB ram
Mac OS 10.5.6

I don't have access to my wife's machine at the moment but it is a 20" iMac of similar vintage and set up (except less RAM) to my machine.

I am usually running PTP Pasteboard, SMARTReporter, Growl, iTunes, TextEdit, iCal, Mail, Safari, Transmit, Photo Mechanic, Photoshop CS3, Adobe RAW batch converter, Adobe Reader 8 or Apple Preview, and Grammarian. I have a lot of other software installed that I have not run recently so I do not know if that list is needed.

My wife is usually running SMARTReporter, Safari, Mail, iPhoto, Firefox, Appleworks, and Adobe Reader 8.

I was using an earlier version of iAntiVirus and did the auto update.

I had run Disk Utility after the initial install but not after the auto update.

We have been unable to recreate this problem, but if the problem does occur again, could you please provide the following info:

Screenshot of iAntiVirus main screen?
Output of the top command?
Screenshot of activity monitor?
What kind of hardware is attached to the Mac? eg, tv tuner, external hdd, wireless - time capsule disk etc.
What you were doing at the time when the issue occured?

Once we receive the above, we will be able to investigate this further.

It is impossible to give you a screen shot of he activity monitor, top of command antivirus main when the problem occurs as the OS is LOCKED as was explained before. So if it is something else you want please expalin. Meantime I have completely unintalled Antivirus as it is not possible to work. There is nothing by way of hardware attached to my mac.
I have been simply working with Office 2008: utting and pasting, spell checking when a crash occurs. BTW I recreated the same problem doing similar things in Thunderbird. Since uninstalling IANtivirus the problem has not occurred at all. Confirming that the issue rests with you.

Since it is now documented by others I suggest you do more research or provide more detailed instructions as to wha tit is that you want. I provided a detailed crash report already. I do not have the time to attempt to recreate teh problem as I have a MAc to be productive not generate crashes. If I wanted crashes I would use a PC.

My Macbook Pro is doing the same thing, it seems to happen soon after booting up (methinks its the update checker sticking) I had my macbook running at 92Celsius which made me worry it was damaged - iavd had the cpu at 99%. I don't recall the version check ok confirmation (set for every launch on mine) appearing after booting up - i could be wrong but this is what i think..
Office 2008 was NOT installed when this happened. It is now however and it still occurs often but not all the time.
If you kill iavd and relaunch it works fine.

I have the latest version, it's a late 2008 macbook pro.

If someone gets a fix let me know... :) I don't want to harm my new baby.

Hi, I originally posted this thread. It took me 20-30 minutes to type out properly and correctly in order to identify the problems.

I was fortunate to be able to "down-grade" from version 1.3 that was causing all of the original problems, and I re-installed version 1.2 and everything is still running good after 1 week.

It seems that version 1.31 and 1.32 are still burning up Macs.

Boy, am I glad that I didn't install any other "new or improved" versions or updates.

My new motto, upgrade or update only, when it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to your productivity. If it ain't broke, don't fix it :)

So, I now have two choices, install a new and improved update, and potentially spend a few hours troubleshooting, or, take my dogs out for a quick walk, and then get ready for bed. Hmmmmm, sounds like a tough decision, but my dogs WIN...

Thanks for a great product, but I'll stick with version 1.2 for now, IAN...

my job involves using the adobe creative suite which can be taxing on my system but iantivirus never interferes with it.if you search on google youll see syslogd problems can be caused by lots of different things http://www.google.com/search?q=syslogd+100%25+cpu

maybe pctools should include a diagnostic tool with iantivirus for people who are having trouble?

I'm also having these problems. I have to do a hard reset of my laptop when it locks up. I'll be happy to help diagnose it if any further input is still needed at this point.

Hi everyone, we're in the process of testing the fix for this issue - because we were unable to recreate it in the office and QA lab we'll do some regression testing and ensure nothing else was broken during the changes made to apply this fix.

Also note that this new package will include an updated set of databases which contain new signatures for the iServices trojan.

Thanks for your patience and help with this - it seems like a nasty problem which unfortunately was quite hard to track down as it isn't affecting all of our users (or anyone in the office!).

Macs have built in security with respect to the heat. The fans will go to the maximum RPM in order to cool it down. Download the new 1.33 version that just came out.

The new version still has a run away ivd service, that when you kill, to stop overheat gives a pop up window saying it cannot reach update service.

As for the fans, yes the fans ramp up, but they cannot contain heat at 92C/200+F I don't think their cooling was designed for that level of overheat.

What you were doing at the time when the issue occured?
Also, did you uninstalled v1.32, rebooted and then installed v1.33 as mentioned in the release announcement?

Once we receive the above, we will be able to investigate this further.

I'm still having the problems described above. Second time today and 5th time since I completely uninstalled, restarted & reinstalled iAntivirus a week ago.

I also have problem with a high CPU usage of iavd using the latest version. When I force it to quit I get a message that it couldn't contact your server, or something.

I noticed that it seems to happen after a fast user switch, but not always.

I have the HD for Parallels and Virtual Box excluded. (Would be good if you could add hidden files or directories).

I use Little Snitch.

Ok so i have this same problem, except i have no problem with the service, just iavd spools up to 100% cpu on one core of a C2D.

Also after letting it run for a while i found out it also turns itself off...eventually, if you are willing to wait half a day or more.

So attached are the screenshots, although why you need TOP and Activity Monitor i dont know since they both say much the same thing (AM is just a GUI wrapper). What might be more useful is console and log readouts, also attached.

Might help find out whats going on.

Might actually just uninstall soon, not that i dont like the app - just dont want it frying my notebook and slowing everything down everytime it hits a bump and throws a wobbly.

Are there any messages in your console beginning with "iAntiVirus::kFSMonitorC" ? If yes then please post them.

Also try and turn off "[x] Scan inside archives" under "Engine settings" in preferences and let me know if the issue goes away.

I'm still having the same problem even after turning off "Scan inside archives." I even re-started my computer and it did it again. I'm not sure about the console, because I don't know where that is.

The console is in Applications -> Utilities
Click "show log list" on the toolbar if the log list isnt showing, make sure "All messages" is highlighted under "LOG DATABASE QUERIES" then paste kFSMonitorC into the "string matching" text field at the top right of the window.

This is a continued problem here too, and I'm rapidly tiring of hearing my Macbook fan running at full speed every time iAntiVirus decides to hog the CPU. I can't believe the developers aren't able to replicate this issue in their test environment, as this was a problem on my old Mac Mini and now continues through on my new Macbook.

You'll need to fix this asap to keep anybody using this software, as the strain on resources and resultant heat build-up simply can't be good for our (expensive) hardware. I'd love to keep using it, but have to protect my laptop first and foremost...

I'm not seeing anything appear in the console at the time the CPU load occurs, but will paste a couple of representative lines from the rest of the time here:

This problem is now occurring every time I restart, so I had to uninstall the program. I did, however, check the console and saw some entries pertaining to iAntivirus during the last episode. I'm including those here in case they are helpful in any way:

I've had this same problem continuing using version 1.34. I noticed that 1.35 became available and attempted to use Smart Update to get that version, but it says I'm up to date. I manually downloaded and updated to 1.35. I'll let you know if the CPU hog problem continues in this version.

Same here. Running latest version. Suffering HIGH CPU load (>90%) for hours... Sometimes it's "fixed" with a reboot. This needs to be looked at. If this can not be solved then I'm sure a lot of users will remove the software from their machine. Will disable "scan in archives" and see if it helps.

I have found that just stopping/starting "Protect my Mac" is sufficient to return things to normality for a while. I also tried ignoring archives but the problem persisted.

just updated to 1.35 and iavd is chewing up the cpu again. In the few weeks I've been trying iAntiVirus -

1. iavd has overheated my mac, and there's still no fix

2. the autoupdate has been faulty and I've just now manually downloaded 1.35 and installed it

3. a few weeks ago I posted some information about how easy it was to disassemble iAntiVirus and when I got no reply, even posted a screenshot of how I modified the registration system as an example. STILL no reply.

I know you must work hard on what is essentially a free product, but when the iAntiVirus client fails to perform the simplest of tasks, how can we have faith in its ability to detect and prevent viruses and other malware? I'm sorry to say I'm going to have to switch to something else until all these issues have been cleared up. :mad:

I have been monitoring iAntivirus in the last days and look like that behavior ( High CPU) didn't show up even if i click in preference is still showing the main Screen.

Same problem as with one of the previous versions after updating to the current one. CPU running on 99% and temperatures rising to 80 deg celsius. I am considering to uninstall this software for good soon. I think I prefer to take the risk to get a virus on my mac (which is nearly impossible) than having my macbook pro burned up in flames... How hard can it be to solve this? Since this problem was discovered and solved some versions ago.

It's difficult to resolve a problem if it can't be recreated inhouse. The team at PC tools have constantly asked for additional info, so it looks like they want to help with fixing this.

Here is my logs that were created using your instructions. I have an iMac and MacBook both running v1.35 with the same high CPU. Both will use ~99% of the CPU for hours at a time, but eventually will go idle.

I installed iAntivirus a few weeks ago. Last night the macbook fan came on and would not stop. I did some research and it indicated some process would be running full blast to cause this. I checked the activity monitor and found nothing. I did run Checkup and saw that both processors were at 100% but no one process showed any significant use. Today, upon further research, I found that by running terminal I could get a list of the running processes. This time it did show iantivirus consuming most of the processors. I uninstalled it and the problem with the fan ceased.

I am having the 99% CPU problem with a new unibody Macbook, Mac OS X 10.5.6 and iAntivirus 1.35.

Could some PC Tools engineer give me his email address so I can send the system profile, ps, and top info? Thanks.

Also, in my case, disabling the 'Protect my mac' option, and immediatly enabling it again, calms down iAntivirus fow a while, but in a few moments it goes back to 99% CPU usage.

More info: I have Normal scan mode selected, Heuristics enabled, and Scan inside archives enabled. I installed iAntivirus it some weeks ago, and it has been silently updating without problems. I have attached a screenshot of my current version.

P.S.: By the way, for people trying to generate debugging info, this command saves 10 iterations of top in a text file. These may be useful info for iAntivirus engineers, so you might want to add it to the 'Report a problem' post.

I've noticed something similar. At first, I thought it was just doing it's weekly scan, until it happened 2 days in a row. It will use a lot of the CPU, and bog the system down. The process, as previously stated by other users, is iavd. I've found that quitting and then restarting iAntiVirus does sometimes solve the issue.

Another user with the same problem checking in.

Running OS v10.5.7 on a 15" 2.16Ghz Core2Duo MBP with v.1.35 of iAntiVirus. The iavd process is constantly pegged at 99% causing the laptop fan to run at full tilt. My wife says this has been happening for about a week now.

EDIT: I stopped iAntiVirus and restarted it. A full scan began automatically and iavd never got over 20% of CPU usage during the scan. Something is definitely wrong when it's idling.

Same problem on my new MacBook running MacOS 10.5.7 The only way to return to normal activity was uninstalling iAntiVirus.

I'd like to underline that this problem didn't appear in the first days after installation, but after 4 weeks. I thought iAntiVirus was a great product but now I'm not so sure :confused:

Please PC Tools, fix this problem as soon as possible.

No, it's not working as intended yet. And they might want to figure it out. I saw iAntiVirus was featured in Macworld magazine today, so there will be an influx of users.

Yesterday, while browsing the internet, I heard my fans kick up to high. I assumed it was due to flash in one of the tabs, so I closed it. Only to find out, that the fans kept going. A look into activity monitor puts iavd right up there at the top, using 100% cpu, and taking my computer up to 180ºF. If you don't know much about the MacBooks, once the CPU hits 200º, damage can occur, and if the fans are on the highest rpm (around 6000 rpms on my model), there's no way to cool it off.

It seems the only way to stop it is to quit iAntiVirus, it will not stop on it's own. I now only run it when I want to scan something, which defeats the purpose of protecting me from downloads.

Any updates on this front? Has the issue been identified? It can't be just the users experiencing this, haven't you been able to duplicate the issue yet?

This has been going since January 2009 and I can't believe that those of us who have reported the issue here are the only ones having this problem. I do wonder whether PCTools serious about iAntivirus. Although iAntivirus is still free, this gives no incentive for people to consider a "paid for" product.

I agree, specially considering we are tech savy users willing to provide logs, debug info and whatnot.

I wonder how many non experienced iAntivirus users are actually experiencing this, but never nottice and just wonder 'Why is my new mac so slow?'

I realize the PCTools team has other free and paid software products to care bout, but come one guys, allocate some resources to this problem.

I'm also having this problem. I have a bog-standard 13" Macbook and the problem usually occurs after waking from sleep mode.

iavd CPU usage goes to around 100% (i have a dual core so this is about half of my processing power) and keeps going indefinately unless i disable and then re-enable the "Protect my Mac" feature. This solves the problem for a while. With "Protect my Mac" turned off the problem never occurs.

Here are some further details which may be useful:

- Im using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G (with NTFS-3G disabled)
- My account has admin rights
- I usually use WiFi
- I'm not running any other 3rd party software

Does anyone else here also use MacFUSE? Might be worth looking into.

AChen. New user here, I've got the same issue on iAntivirus 1.35. After sleeping the mac several times (3-4) and changing wireless networks, I will see iavd take up 70+% of CPU resources, causing everything (mainly Safari 4.0.2 and FireFox 3.5.1) to choke.

As you can see, it is related to a leak of somesort.

Likewise, when I kill iavd, I get the failed message shown here:

From my limited debugging skills, I would suggest that if iavd can't do an update (because it's launching when there is no valid network connection), the daemon goes "spastic" chewing up cpu cycles.

I tried using the mac for a while-> putting it to sleep-> disconnecting the network-> waking it up-> Tried to update-> all seems to be running ok. I'll have a chat to the devs and see what we can do to investigate this further.

Update: I have done a complete format of my drive and a clean reinstall of OS X without restoring from a backup.

It's been about a week and the problem seems completely gone. I guess only time will tell if it returns.

When you start reinstalling applications and you see the problem return, it will be good if you could give us an idea of what could be causing the problem or what applications you have reinstalled then we'll be able to check this out further.

I have been encountering the same issue as others in this thread. As such, I've decided to add my data here to assist with the troubleshooting.

When this snapshot was taken, two user profiles were open. Each using different apps. After the snapshot was taken, I had quit all open apps, in both profiles and still, Activity Monitor reports iavd using ~99.5% of one core (it's a dual core iMac) and roughly 300MB of RAM.

I've taken a template from another post and populated it with my information.

For now, I'm going to disable 'Protect My Mac'. I then need to ask, "What's the point of running the app?" Which negates the benefit of having purchased it.

Please tell us:

Its been about 2 weeks after a clean install of OS X and the problem is back.

Happened while browsing "My Ebay" on eBay. Another time i wasn't even using my Mac and i noticed it had started while it was idling.

Very annoying. iAntivirus would be the best of its kind if it didn't have this issue.

Unfortunately, the problem does not appear to be solved. I re-installed the new version, and the CPU usage problem cropped up again twice after only a day.

Bad news.

Yesterday i got snow leopard and performed a fresh install.
I let my Macbook idle over night and this morning i noticed iavd was up to its usual mischief taking up around 99% of my cpu.

I had the same problem with the old version so I stop using it until recently when I upgraded to Snow leopard and I saw the new iAntivirus version 1.36.

However, before I installed the new version, I uninstalled the old one and also manually erased everything of the old iAntivirus from the Library.. I think it was either in Preference or Caches. I just did a search of iAntivirus and PCtools.

Then Installed iAntivirus 1.36 and I have been monitoring my CPU usage for two weeks now and everything works fine. ;)

I did a clean install of snow leopard (no update) and installed a fresh 1.36 iantivirus onto that. The problem occured on the same day.

About a month ago i did a clean install of Leopard(1.5) and a clean install of 1.35 iantivirus onto that and it took about 2 weeks for the problem to occur for the first time.

I have a suspicion that streaming media may have something to do with it but i have no proof, its just a hunch.

Yesterday I installed iTunes 9, then this morning after watching three youtube videos iavd started to hog 98% of memory consistently.

When I quit the process, a little pop up showed on top saying that iantivirus was unable to connect to the server. I believe is the scheduled update.

i have been using Scan mode: Fast (in Preferences>General) for the past week and i have not had a single incedent. This is not long enough to prove anything but i wanted to ask other users what they were using? My other settings are: Scan inside archives checked and Heuristics set to Normal.

When I scan, I use quick scan. However, I think is the smart update that is causing the CPU hog. Today I was able to catch right when iand started to hog the CPU and as soon I closed it said that was unable to connect to the server and will try next time. I check the log about the last update check and was 7 days ago. I have disabled automatic updates to see what happen.:)

Just checking to see if there has been a resolution to this issue, hopefully a patch in the near future.

I installed the software yesterday and within 1 hour after installation my machine's resources were eaten up by iAntivirus.

I've re-enabled iAntivirus with automatic updates turned off, to test Fansntt's theory that the update function is causing the excessive CPU usage. It's only been about a day, but so far so good. I'll report back later after more time has passed.

It has now been 3 weeks since I turned iAntivirus back on, with automatic updates disabled, and I have not encountered the excessive CPU problem. I was never able to run iAntivirus before without this problem, so the automatic updates may indeed be the culprit. Perhaps the developer could look into this.

To test this theory further, I've now re-enabled automatic updates. I'll report back again once I know what happens.

Today, I got the CPU issue again. I opened the preferences and turned off automatic updates. I got an error message along the lines "unable to contact service" or something like that. I seems that the updater is hanging because it can't do whatever it is trying to do. I'm more convinced than ever that the automatic updater is the source of this problem.

I have the same problem. I had iavd using 100% CPU. Quit the app and relaunched. Unable to get iavd to use any great amount of CPU. Not sure what triggers the looping.

The error in the logs appears to be related to a memory release issue.

From the net -
Each thread that uses Obj-C objects (appkit, foundation etc, directly or indirectly) must have an autorelease pool in place. This is explained in the documentation for NSAutoReleasePool.

NSAutoReleasePool only affects Objective C objects. Cross-platform frameworks generally don't know anything about Obj-C.

Just wrap your thread with

NSAutoreleasePool *autoreleasepool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init];
// do thread work
[autoreleasepool release];

After playing with all possible combinations of activating/deactivating features of iAntivirus here is what I found out, at least on my mid-2007 virtually out of the box iMac:

With "Protect My Mac" on the resource hog problem appears.

With "Protect My Mac" off, the resource hog problem goes away but neither the auto-smart update nor the auto-scan work.

So I just run iAntivirus once a day to do a manual smart update and a manual scan.

I sent my profile file to AChen per the administrator that activated by account so he could try and determine what might be causing the problem.

I'm having the same issue as other people who have posted in this topic, for me it's been going on ever since i updated to v 1.3. It happens on every mac where i have the software installed (3 at the moment) intermittently the cpu usage of iavd jumps to 99% and stays there until i quit iAntivirus. The syslog contains lots of entries similar to the ones displayed earlier, and one that i haven't seen posted before, something about flushing the queue.

Once i Quit iAntivirus and relaunch it everything is fine until the next time it happens, which again doesn't seem to be on any set schedule or pattern that I have noticed.

Hi guys, I have the same problem and even though I don't have the time to provide you with any log outputs or whatever, the problem seems to be iAntiVirus auto-update thing, not the virus definitions update but the program itself (source: my brain, won't try to explain why but it seems this is the case based on what people here have written). You probably already knew this. Please include us in your reasoning of what might cause this problem as it is both interesting to us as users and potential buyers and also interesting for some of us with developer backgrounds.

Also, did you notice that all of the people who have written in about this problem has the free version, could this be why you guys can't recreate it? (I don't mean to undermine your reasoning abilities, just wanted to know if these observations were correct.)

Keep up the good work guys, you can do this! :D

This is completely anecdotal evidence with not a shred of proof, but it seems to me that iavd starts hanging when I visit flash-heavy websites in Firefox. YouTube for example. Hope that helps a little.

I am pretty surprised that this hasn't been fixed in a year. Can anybody at PC Tools confirm that they have actually narrowed this issue down and/or been able to replicate this behaviour?

Surely you've made some progress in a year - this is a massively serious issue that should take priority above all else. I certainly wouldn't recommend iAntiVirus to anybody until it's fixed - unless they want to slowly bake their Mac...

This issue (and in fact this very thread) have been open for more than a year at this point. There has been no official information or communication from the developers that I am aware of and apparently no solution in sight.

This problem has occurred on every single mac that I have installed this program on, it has happened with every application update and every database update. The chance that it will happen is 100%. If you are using this software, then this is happening to you. The only question is if you monitor your mac closely enough or use it often enough to know that it's happening.

Any issue that has this many replies and reports from customers should have been a top priority. The fix or at the very least a coding workaround should have been issued 12 months ago. As far as I can tell the developer doesn't care one little bit.

Therefore, I am regrettably forced to classify this application as Abandoned and to stop using this program as well as to recommend that my customers remove it as well.

I'm inclined to agree with the other poster - PC Tools have shown little or no interest in fixing this, despite the fact it is a long standing and common issue.

It's simply not good enough to release a utility with such a bug, and not to fix it.

I have had this same problem with the process iavd in root. It triggers when iAntiVirus is in Protect my Mac mode, and I run an application it doesn't like, but it makes no notification or entry in the history in its preferences. One such app was ClamXavSentry, which I was trying out. That program also produced numerous Adobe Flash sandboxing errors. My system log showed this:

with the second string repeated many, many times. The same thing happened when I ran OSXRootkitHunter with iAntiVirus in Protect my Mac mode.

I didn't bake my MacBook, because I don't leave it logged in and unattended, and most importantly, I have iStatMenus, which immediately clued me in to the problem, if the fans going full speed wouldn't have. In both cases, simply quitting the iAntiVirus app brought the CPU usage to normal, and I was then able to reactivate the Protect my Mac mode.

This had nothing to do with an automatic update, since in the second occurrence, I had put the Smart Update app in the dock, and run a manual update check before the flush. I had also deactivated the auto update options in iAntiVirus preferences prior to the first occurrence.

To users: If you suspect this iavd flush, just quit iAntiVirus. You can start it up again with no problem. It wouldn't be a bad idea to download iStatMenus, too (it's free). BTW, if you have a unibody late 2009 MB/MBP, the network activity monitor doesn't work in iStatMenus, but everthing's golden with the widget version, iStatPro. I still monitor CPU, and I have Little Snitch, which offers some monitoring of network activity. You should also know that iAntiVirus will run from login, unless you remove that item at System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items.

Syslog showing log from bootup and iavd misbehaving and chewing cpu, process killed and restarted twice and after second time behaves.
Only thing running was system and chrome, previous post on heavy flash could be on to something as had been to youtube.

Am on version1.36 and hopefully this helps the debugging

I'm not very techy so going into logs etc isn't something I know much about.
I do however, notice when my MBP uses up battery power at an exceedingly excessive rate. I've just been using my MBP for just over 2 hours on a fully charged battery and I'm now down to 39 minutes.
All I've been using is Safari and I noticed the fan kick in and how unbearably hot the bottom of my MBP was.
I recalled reading a title of a thread on the forum so came on here to check it out. Sure enough, it seems to be the same thing!

I've quit iAntiVirus and everything seemed to go back to normal apart from battery usage (stills seems a bit excessive).

I'm running a MBP 15" unibody with 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4gb RAM, using Snow Leopard OS 10.6.2 with all the latest upgrades, patches etc.

I have noticed that the fan kicks in after downloading files or after viewing video files on websites. It's something that has happened only since installing and running iAntiVirus so that seems to be what is causing it.

Now I have an idea about what's happening to my beloved "flat Mac", I will keep an eye on it. If needs must and no other option is available, I will uninstall the program:(

As with many others, I am surprised that the problem is not easily able to dupe in the lab. However, living with a telecomms engineer has given be great insight into software faults and how faults can often not be what the seem and can be caused by a many number of factors. When the logical doesn't work, thinking outside the box usually does the trick;)
Could it be down to the processors?
Could it be interaction with other software?
Is it a piece of code in the programming that's causing it?

You could go on and on...

I'm sure this is being looked into as best as can possibly be when you have umpteen other things to fix and develop, engineers only have one pair of hands after all! But this clearly is a problem and as someone has already suggested, how many other people are suffering in silence with this issue?
I'm sure (if I remember correctly) that an email address has to be supplied when you download the software, perhaps people could be contacted to see if they have the issue? Good customer service (even with regards to a free product) can give excellent marketing results by creating a bond of trust and could lead to further sales:) Just a thought.

Yep... On my Quad i7 Mac, the fan started to make lots of noise... iavd process was taking 98% of the CPU. I don't see the point in having a anti-malware software that seems to act like a malware!

Come on this is ridiculous!

There is a long standing serious issue which affects users on different configurations and it has done for well over a year and PC Tools have made no progess in fixing it.

Anti virus that uses 100% of your CPU is AS BAD as any virus - iAntivirus is currently worthless.

Like many others here, I have also experienced the excessive CPU usage problem, but it doesn't happen very often in my case, and I don't think it has anything to do with the system.log file, since my system.log is quite small, and rotates on a regular basis. Occasionally, however, I have noticed iavd using about 98% of one of my cores on my dual core Mac Mini. At first I thought maybe it was doing a scheduled scan, but quickly found out it wasn't. I've given it several minutes to bring itself back under control, but it never does, so I have to kill and restart iAntiVirus.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to isolate anything that might be causing the problem, and it doesn't happen often enough for me to notice a pattern. I'm almost sure it does not have anything to do with log files though, at least not in my case.

So far I have noticed that iAntivirus causes CPU hog when I am using MS Office and in some flash videos. I haven't seen that happening when I am not using either of the two above apps.

OK, so I updated to V1.36 (free product version 2009, engine V1.0.0.11, database V2.0.46) on a fully updated 10.5.8 MacBookPro. That changed the prior repeating messages in the system log (Console) to (sample):

Mar 23 08:24:11 [myname here]-macbook-pro [0x0-0x734734].com.pctools.iAntiVirus[10213]: : flushed queue.iavd: flushed queue.iavd: flushed queue.iavd: (& several hundred repetitions of same flushed queue message)

It does this 8 times in a row, i.e., a new log entry like above, starting (this example case) at 3:07am, then again at 3:54am, 4:45am, 5:31am, 6:17am, 6:54am, 7:35am, & 8:24am. There are no other intervening log entries.

How can this be right? What is going on here?!

Currently running v1.36 on a 15" MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz 4GB DDR3 RAM OS X 10.6.2. I've noticed two things about this issue that seem significant. First, it has been happening for a very long time. This thread alone is more than a year old. Second, when it happens to me, it always seems to be after an update. I end up killing the process through Activity Monitor, and iAntivirus pops up a warning that it is unable to connect to the server. So, pctools people, any idea when you'll fix this or even what's wrong with your program?

I came back here to see if this problem was still active. I uninstalled iAntiVirus a while back because of this issue, and switched to ClamXav. I was thinking of switching back, but seeing that this issue is still around, I've decided against that.

OK, I kept wondering why my machine would get slower and slower, and hotter and hotter, and then the fans would run all the time, and the battery would not last as long. So I opened my activity monitor, and I see this:

Not the line marked in yellow. 96% of the CPU (it would stick at 100% at time, but I could not capture that) and almost 40% of the available memory are also in use. Really?

I opened the the virus program, and a scan WAS NOT taking place. Nothing seemed to be happening, except using up resources.

I also note that this does not happen all the time, and takes a while to get here. Maybe days after rebooting. But in a few tests over a few days I saw that the usage slowly creeps up, in both memory and CPU. I can't help but wonder if the app keeps allocating memory but not releasing it, and most of the CPU time is dealing with all that memory?

In any case, I see this thread started in Jan 2009, so this is really pathetic that they have not fixed this. Either they do not care because it is a free app, or they have no clue at all. Too bad really, I like their PC product, but find it hard to trust that now as well. :(

When I forced quit the app, shortly after I regained 1.5 GB of HD space. Seems there was perhaps a large swap file for this errant process as well? Or maybe it was using so much memory, the swap file got that much bigger?. How odd, but I gained speed and space! :)

Well, it's been fun. I've had iavd for quite a while now, and the only thing it's done for me is dominate my cpu. It has never identified or quarantined a piece of malware. It has never alerted me to any threat, except to warn me I would be unprotected if I close the program.

I have avoided going to a different virus protection for a while on the blind faith that eventually pcTools would actually address this issue where iavd gets stuck in some kind of loop and uses all my system resources to write an enormous log file. I was a fool.

In looking back through this thread I notice that there appeared to be interest from the company as far back as 2006. Four years ago they thought this might be something to address. They never did.

Good bye iavd. Your failure to perform and constant interference have forever sullied my opinion of anything pcTools creates.
