i have only xp at home. working on my nephew new laptop (vista)
im not familar with inner wokings of vista.

on this new laptop getting only two bars of connectivity and it drops often. the dlink dir 615 router is on the opposite side of the house. i added a homemade directional antenna... still no better.
i ve noticed in vistas wireless network connection properties i have both internet protocol version 4 (ipv 4) and 6 (ipv6) checked, is this normal, should both be checked.. im assuming since the laptop is new the settings come from the factory and both should be checked... just checking cause i thought ipv4 is older version

thanks

Yes, IPV4 and IPV6 are normal. IPV6 is an extension of IPV4 and is the next generation. You can read more about it here: [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6.

Regarding your network. Signal strength affected by distance and barriers (walls, floors, halls, etc.). You might want to consider a repeater which significantly improves range.

Hi diablo1,

Try putting the Dlink wireless router up on a shelf or something. Anything to get it up higher than any surrounding metal objects such as computer cabinets, monitors, et cetera. That might do the trick. I stuck my brother's Linksys wireless router on top of his bookshelf and now he gets great wireless reception througout his house.
