I have this enabled, and it is not scanning my emails. I am also running Pctools firewall.
Using Outlook Express, with Popfile filter. Every other email virus scanner has worked (over the years at least three others)

You may want to consider using Live Mail. This is Microsoft's replacement for Outlook Express and has a lot of neat features like Spam Control. In addition, it will convert all your contacts, emails, etc. upon install.
Check it out here:

I'm running that setup, too. I'm just assuming Email Guard is doing its thing. How do you know it's not scanning?
Let me know what you're observing and I'll check mine and see if I can help out.

I'm using windows mail. initially I was wondering if sd was scanning e-mail and noticed I had forgotten to check the box under e-mail filter that tells SD to mark e-mail as checked. Once I did so i was reassured

Yes, I have the program set to attach a message. This is how I know it is not working

OK. I've enabled the attach a message feature which I un-checked (or didn't check mark, I forget) at some point in time.
I'll scrutinize my incoming mail it and post up my findings here as soon as I can.

This is interesting. Email retrieved from the POP server at qwest.net displays the SD "Mark" while email retrieved from the POP server at gmail.com does not. Which is not to say that the gmail content isn't getting checked.
I suspect this behavior is a result of gmail's service being primarily Web hosted with POP as a secondary, perhaps virtual (or emulated) service. I would like to think the scan is functional and it's the text insertion that's failing. (For me the point is moot as I trust gmail's Postini based filtering to handle the bad stuff.)
The POP server at Qwest is a "real" POP service with no Web hosted intervention.
Another consideration is gmail POP requires SSL via port 995 whereas Qwest uses plain old connectivity thru port 110. That might have something to do with it, too.
So, my next question to you would be: is your POP hosted by a Web-primary POP-optional service (such as gmail, myway/bluetie, mail dot com, yahoo or mail2web) and what are your connection settings?

I changed my incoming to port 110 , which is standard. Still the emails I receive do not get marked. My outgoing email is getting scanned, but not my incoming.

The email scanner does not scan with Popfile. I cut popfile from the loop, and incoming messages show the pctools message. Three other email scanners I've used had no problem with the popfile setup.
Basically, you change your incoming server to 127.0.0.1 , then in your account name insert your "incoming server:loginname" in your email program. SD can't seem to handle this.

Try this: change that 127.0.0.1 to 127.0.0.2, if possible.
Does that work?

Tried the 127.0.0.2 , this does not work. the other scanners, (Mcaffee, AVG, Norton, Antvir) all worked OK with popfile. Spyware doctor must do it much differently than the others. Some of the email scanners above display a pop up or you can see your tray icon animated, while your email is being scanned in or out, which is a good way to know it is working.

Well, the 127.0.0.2 was a long shot.
I was surprised, too, that SD doesn't provide a visual cue that it is scanning as email is being retrieved.
Time for you to fire off an inquiry directly to PC Tools support as there doesn't seem to be any activity with the issue here though that might be partly due to the Holidays.
If you acquire a solution, post it up here if you care to.
Good luck!
