hello i have recently purchased a lap top that was already 12 months old at the point when i purchased it. (second hand) it has windows vist premium.

i have downloaded the free version of spyware doctor and have been using it for a few weeks, the first scan i ran with this detected no problems.

i came accros information about stealth spy monitorning software and this prompted me to purchase the full version, after running a "full" scan using this version it did detect one high risk threat (trojan.inject!sd5).

when i was running the free version of spyware doctor it put the spyware doctor icon in the task bar at the bottom right of the screen on each and every startup.

now i have purchased the full version the icon in the bottom right of the task bar does not appear?

the main concurn i have is, are my credit card details going to be safe to use with the lap top?

http://www.win-spy.com/

the link to this sight has been blocked by spyware doctor now i have the full version, however reading what this software claims to do has made me aprehencive of using the lap top and especially using it with credit card details.

so i suppose what i really need to know is does my spyware doctor FULLY protect me from such software that claims to distroy antispyware products on its detection and remain undetectable.

if i dowload this product from http://www.win-spy.com/ will it destroy my spyware doctor or will may spyware doctor detect it and inactivate it?

the only way i coud know for sure is to purchase the product and then run a full scan with my spyware doc, but before i do that does anyone know the answer to this question?

there is also this software ive come across that makes me even more uncomfortable http://www.e-stealth.com/ULTIMATE-STEALTH-SPY-SUITE-FOR-PC-LAPTOP_p_0-9.html

if anyone has any advice in this regard to what i should do in this instance i would be more than greatful to here from you?

many thanks

nemo:)

Re: the tray icon. Did you uninstall the free version of Spyware Doctor before you installed the paid copy? If not, you should uninstall all versions, delete the C:\program Files\Spyware Doctor folder if it exists and re-install the paid version.

I have the utmost faith in Spyware Doctor protecting you from things like win-spy. I have been using it for many years now including doing online purchases etc. I think that you have a greater chance of getting your credit card skimmed at a restaurant that off the internet. (I did).

Since your PC is used, I would suggest that you download Malwarebytes antimalware from www.malwarebytes.org for a secondary scan just to be sure.

I would definitely NOT recommend downloading win-spy as a test.

You make no mention of antivirus software. You definitely need this in addition to Spyware Doctor. You can upgrade to Spyware Doctor with Antivirus as one solution.

As far as downloading any other anti-spy/anti-virus software such as you noted in your post, make sure that you google the product before you ever download it. There are many anti-malware programs masquerading as genuine when they are actually malware programs, and nasty ones at that.

Cheers.

i own a few spy softwares .... sort of speak and yes the stealth ones too spyware doctor does a good job finding these trust me ive tested them :D and continue to do so .... now just make sure no one gains access to your puter and allows the programs not to be scanned manually you can check these in the spyware doctor settings in the scan exceptions/trusted programs if someone has access to your machine and installed some the title of the spyware may not be so obvious but if you havent added it to the allow list yourself it is self explanitary remove it ;) also if using a seperate anitvirus progam check those exceptions also .

regarding other applications take the good advise above be wary what you download :)

there was antivirus software on the lap top when i got it (avg free edition) which does continue to run and update automatically after i installed spy ware doctor and i will try to look to see if there are permissions made within spy ware doctor for it to access the net, im not entirely sure where i would do this tho?

its good to know that spyware doc should find this sort of software tho!

oh and i do have the virus attachment in spyware doctor activated and did wonder if this provides sufficient enough protection to remove the avg free edition and just have this for the lap tops virus need?

i will look at the other scan software provided in the links one of you guys suggested and most likely download then. thanks and merry Christmas :)

Nemo,

Yes, I believe that sd/av provides good antivirus protection. I use it myself.

More importantly, you do NOT want 2 antivirus programs running. It will cause conflicts.

uninstall avg .... i know a lot of people swear by it , but trust me they only like it cos its free i had a computer the other day that wanted sorting it had avg free addition on i removed it scanned with spyware doctor antivirus and also bitdefender they both found loads of threats . i know things cost money but if you still want to go free with the antivirus and insist use avast over avg but like the above post running two antivirus programs on one machine may cause some confliction.

AVG Free missed a few viruses on my friend's machine which Norton AV did find. Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic is free and highly rated though. ThreatFire AntiVirus is free and can coexist with other AV products since it examines program behavior rather than using AV signatures. Note that ThreatFire AntiVirus is best used in conjunction with another AV program such as Avira or even AVG. The one really good free product from Comodo which I like is Comodo Memory Firewall. This small app prevents malware from installing itself by exploiting buffer overrun vulnerabilities. Note that CMF is not to be confused with a software firewall which blocks programs and ports. CMF instead does only one thing -- prevent attacks using buffer overrun techniques.

so now that i have the antivirus running with my spyware doctor i should uninstall the avg? because of conflicts? i understand what you mean by conflicts, two programs running at the same time with same objectives. but would these conflicts cause a security risk?

and wouldn't it be the case that if one antivirus missed infections that the other didnt, then the same could be said in reverse?

so uninstalling one of them could leave you vulnerable to the infections that the other would have protected you against but didnt, as it was uninstaled. does this make sense?

ive often wondered what happens to the viruses that programs detect and solve once the antivirus that detected it was uninstall.

It all depends how they works and what kind of 'guards' they have. Most Free anti Virus only detect by scanning, but do not prevent running and entering.
What is for sure is that they use resources and slows down Your comp.
You may have several AV's installed, but only one at the time running active.
You may then from time to time do a scan with the alternate AV, but suggest You shut down SD/AV when doing so.

as far as i know it does not work this way. having more than one antivirus does not mean you will be more protected. all it will do is create conflicts, and it might even make you more susceptible to infection. i occasionally use trend micro's free scanner to see if it picks up anything my antivirus does not pick up, but i would never install another program. i think more than one antispyware is okay, but definitely not antivirus.

I tend to agree. Pick the single antivirus program which you prefer and use that all the time. Occasionally you might want to temporarily disable it and run one of the major vendor's free online AV scanners just to make sure that your system is clean.

You can also perform a similar task with your anti-malware software. Once a week, usually just before I take a shower in the morning, I temporarily disable Spyware Doctor and then run Malwarebytes's Anti-malware (free version) after downloading updates for it, just to have complete peace of mind that there is absolutely nothing lurking on my computer.

I then start either a full or incremental system backup job running, and then I hit the shower.
