Am just tyring out PCTools Antirus at a school that I help out with but am having trouble getting it to update :-(. I just get the:
UPDATE FAILED:
Error downloading the list of updates. Please try again later.

The school PCs sit behind an Endian Firewall (a Linux box) and access the internet via that server by setting a proxy in IE.
IE works fine through the proxy but PCTools antivirus doesnt want to update at all.

Looking through the threads it seems that the Antivirus product itself does not have anywhere to set a proxy server and it looks like it uses the IE config to get its update. Is this assumption correct.

I dont know much about the Endian Linux box but am pretty sure that it is not blocking .exe files at the moment (otherwise I couldnt have downloaded the install!).

Any ideas.

Thanks

Endian Firewall can block incoming internet and also outgoing internet. If it at school you can't fix this problem because only the school can set to allow or block access to the internet. Try installing PC Tools AntiVirus angain and see if this problem is back again

Hope it helps

Khim,

Thanks for the reply.

I am at the school and have checked the settings in Endian firewall and all seems to be ok. I'm not sure deinstalling and reinstalling is going to help. It is a newly built machine and has just had PCTools Antivirus put on it, so I dont think it is a problem with the workstation itself.

I want to understand how PCTools antivirus copes with a proxy server. Does it just use the settings that are configure in IE? Or can you hack the registry somewhere?

Thanks

Hi e-class,

The reason why you are unable to update is because PCTAV does not have a proxy server option at this stage. This is something we are looking into.

Anthony,

Thanks for the info - do you have any idea when the proxy server option might be included? Is it likely to be weeks, months or even years?

A few more questions if you dont mind.

Once I have installed the from the initial setup program, will this setup include all the updates as of that day or does the initial install only have the updates as of the time it was made?

Also, I have read some forum postings about offline updates.
If I get another PC connnected before the firewall and download the updates there, could I copy the relevant files to the PCs behind the firewall? Any idea which files I would be looking at.

Any more help as to how I might get round this would be appreciated.

Thanks again for your help.

Please see answers to your questions below:

Proxy server settings will be introduced in the coming months. Can't exactly provide the exact timeframe at this stage.
Installation does not have the latest updates. So once you install PCTAV, you will need to run a Smart Update.
Can copy database files over from 1 PC to another from Updates folder.

Anthony,

Many thanks for your answers, they have been very helpful.
I look forward to the new proxy version sometime in the near future.

In the meantime, I will ensure we get the updates past the proxy server by manually copying in the 'Updates' folder.

Thanks again

Apologies for replying to my post but does PCTools host the updates folder anywhere. This would seem a sensible 'interim' solution to the proxy problem. If it was hosted somewhere, even via FTP then we could download the the updates from there. I agree that this may circumvent the Smart Update solution but it would only be temporarily until the proxy issue was sorted.
If it was a real concern then maybe even restrict to a group of registered users forcing standard users to use the normal Smart Update routine.

Can this quick solution be done?

Many thanks
