View Full Version : Broken link to 'Threat Icon'

Hello folks

I've recently installed BD, running XP SP3 and IE7, but I've noticed that after doing a Google search, I have broken links to the green/red/yellow icons (stored in the PCTBDRes.dll file) at the end of each result link.

Could it be that the DLL wasn't registered properly? And if so, how can I do it manually from the 'Run...' prompt?

I've re-installed BD but I get the same broken icon link.

Regards

Chris :(

I am not sure if this is the cure to your problem, but it is an answer to your question.

How to register (or re-register) a DLL or OCX file

Go to the Run item on the Start menum, and type:

regsvr32 <path & filename of dll or ocx>

Thanks for your reply Haapy.

I tried to register the DLL earlier today but got the error message:

"PCTBDRes.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file cannot be registered."

Maybe the broken link to the icons is to do with my IE7 security settings, or even Norton Internet Security 2008. I've looked at the various settings available to me but nothing leaps-out at me.

Cheers anyway

Hi,

We tried to recreate the problem but was not successful. Could you try uninstalling first and then resintalling. Download BD from http://www.browserdefender.com/download.

Hi AChen

I followed your instructions but the result remains the same.

Maybe, part of my Registry is corrupt (I'll try a repair later today), or maybe it's a security/IE7 setting somewhere in which case I may never find it.

I guess I'll learn to live with it.

Thanks for your thoughts anyway.

I've uninstalled BD...repaired the Registry...rebooted...re-installed BD...and I still get the broken link to the icons :(

Will keep on looking for solution:rolleyes:

Hi all

I've used two different Registry cleaners, each time rebooting, each time uninstalling and re-installing BD but to no affect.

What I have noticed is that if BD is installed then IE7 shows an 'exclamation warning triangle' on the status bar. If I inspect the error in detail, it usually says 'invalid character, line 2, char 0' or something very similiar.

If I uninstall BD then the error triangle disappears.

I now wonder if it is Norton Internet Security 2008 or IE7 or XP SP3 that is blocking the icon object from being viewed on the web page.

Whatever it is, it's a shame, because I don't get the threat assesment at the end of each link.

Cheers for now

Have you tried clearing out your temp files via CCleaner or Cleanup!?

You might have some bad cached web pages.

Hi

I used CCleaner today but...the problem remains.

I see that you tried installing BD on IE7, is there any chance that you installed any IE8 components?

Are you using Windows XP Media Center by any chance?

AChen and haapy

I'm unaware of installing/using either XP Media Centre or IE8 components...unless of course those components were automatically downloaded and installed as part of my regular Windows Update Service.

I'll check my history of installed Microsoft updates, but I suspect that I'm not running any of these components that you mention.

To clarify. Windows XP Media Center is an operating system, a variant of XP Home and XP Pro. Not usually available in stores, usually preloaded by the vendor. The reason that I asked is that I am having trouble loading BD on a XP Media Center PC.

Hi haapy

In that case, no I'm not running Media Centre...I'm most definitely running XP SP3.

My apologies, I thought Media Centre was a more glamorous version of Windows Media Player rather than an OS. I must read-up more on these techie issues.

Hi folks

Today, I installed BD for FireFox (FF)...and yippeee it worked just like it says on the box :D

Unfortunately, I don't use FF as my default browser :(

So, being a stubborn so-and-so, I've gone back to IE7 to investigate further. The BD download sizes between IE7 and FF is significant.

I'm now wondering...does BD (IE7) require a particular version of Java?

Here is what I have found out about Java.

If you keep old versions of Java, your PC is at a security risk.

Why Sun does not remove them on an upgrade, I'll never know.

I suggest removing all versions of Java, then go to www.sun.com and download the latest which is Java 6, Update 11.

See if that works.

Also clear out your IE7 cache if you haven't already, although CCleaner should have done that.

BTW.. if you have Adobe Flash 9, remove and get 10. Security issues with 9.

Hi haapy

I had upgraded Java to V6 update 11 but to no avail regarding BD. I have noticed that all previous versions of Java have since disappeared, so maybe this version removes previous versions. Wishful thinking I know.

I've also upgrade .NET to 3.5 hoping this might influence things...but no joy.

I think it's just one of those things running XP SP3, NIS 2008, SD, ThreatFire, Ad-Aware and BD...altogether...along with Active-X, COM, Java and .NET services...no wonder things don't quite work-out the way they should.

Maybe I'll have a stiff whisky over the festive season...that might spark another idea :D

If you have the latest version or Adaware, it has active components.

Check your serevices and your task manager. I have seen conflicts with this.

I have found that Adaware and Spybot are a bit less useful than they used to be.

There is something else that you could try. Resetting your IE7. This has fixed a lot of quirky issues like yours in the past.

Before you do this make a restore point as if it doesn't not work, you may want to restore.

Ctrl panel, internet options, advanced, reset.

See if that fixes your problem.

We'll continue to look into this issue and see if we can recreate the problem with all the info you guys have provided :)

Hi haapy & AChen

Happy New Year:D

haapy: I know what you mean regarding Ad-Aware from Lavasoft...my webpages run slightly slower but it's still tolerable at the moment. Services seem ok. Regarding IE7...I'm reluctant to do a full 'reset' as I have Norton (NIS2008), BD and VisualRoute browser toolbars or add-ons installed and I'm not too confident that they'll re-install correctly after the 'reset'. So, I will leave well alone.

I've also tried, altering one-by-one (tedious task:D ), the settings on Tools-->Internet Options-->Security-->security level Custom settings...but again, no joy.

AChen: I sit here with everything crossed, fingers, legs, arms, eyes, everything...in hopeful anticipation that the developers can find a solution...after all, it is only a Beta;)

Chris:)

AG,

A couple of options:

1. Run IE with no addons. You will find this in one of the Start Program Folders. But if you can not find it, here is the command:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

This does not impact any normal IE settings and is a good way to test before re-set.

2. You can go into IE Options, Programs, Manage Add-ons and selectively disable Activex controls to see if any one is causing the issue

3. If all else fails, you can create a restore point, reset IE, try it and if it works then you have isolated the problem. You can always go back to the restore point that you created. I have found that with these tricky issues, the only solution that I could find was to reset IE and all was good again. I do understand your caution with this option..

Could you post a screenshot of this - "I have broken links to the green/red/yellow icons (stored in the PCTBDRes.dll file) at the end of each result link."

Also, have you installed any previous versions of BD? If so, did this start occuring on the most recent version only?

happy & AChen

I am full of mixed emotions at the moment...why?...I have a confession to make...:o

Today, I upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2009 which installed without any problems. As part of the package, I downloaded a Beta version of Norton's equivalent of Browser Defender. As it embeds itself into the IE7 browser, it also displayed a 'broken link' (my description) at the end of each Google search weblink.

So, I bit the bullet and followed haapy's advice...and reset IE7:eek:

Excellent news...the little icons were back:D
Bad news...Norton's had over-ridden BD:(

I tried to re-install BD (after uninstalling it) but Norton's is well and truly embedded.

So, for the time being at least, I will continue with Norton's version. If it fails or gets annoying, then I'll attempt to uninstall it ...or perhaps disable it in the Add-Ons...and re-install BD.

AChen: As such, I cannot show you what result I was getting, only to say that it is a little rectangular icon, grey background, with three coloured shapes inside it...that looks familiar with other Windows icons found in Rundll32.dll (I think) or some similar file...default icon when nothing else is available?

The icon appeared at the end of every Google search weblink, which is were I was expecting to see the BD icon.

I hope this helps guys.

kind regards

Chris
