This was part of a post from 5-09-2008 in regards to the cutting back of the definitions in the spyware doctor starter edition.

" Has PC Tools removed the "crippled database" limitation from the trial and Starter editions of Spyware Doctor?

I've seen reports that the "e" versions of the database are the most up-to-date versions. However, the "Current database version" thread says that the latest version is 5.09790 (without the "e").

IMO the idea of giving trial and starter edition users a reduced database defeats the purpose of those editions. People want a full database right from the start because they want to detect ALL the spyware on their systems, not just part of it." Posted by PALADIN

I got this off a forum board link. I also get news letters from gizmo richards called windows secrets. I know the definitions were cut back and that if there is no "e" in the definitions then it's not the latest version. Many forums told the viewers that they would not support the starter edition, as did news letters. That was like seven months ago. So on the stater edition what is the status. I think the paid spyware doctor has 400,000 definitions? If I'm wrong please correct me. Whats the total defintions on the starter edition. Are the definitions the latest. I'm not here to be a pain. It was a good program at one time. If nothing has changed then all i wasted was a post. I don't understand why unless pc tools was losing money for the change, most paid and freeware are different by added features. They are usually the same as far as the guts of the product. I know the stater edition is a different engine than the paid version. What ever it is it is.:D I'd only try it if it has the same definitons as the paid version, to much bad stuff on the web today. PEACE:cool:

Look I know that this to some members may make me seem like i'm a jerk, but I can't afford spyware doctor the paid version as i have been out of work for over two years with a illness. I have used the paid version in the past and need to add a spyware. I want something better than Spybot,Ad ware, Spyware terminator. Please answer I'm not a bad guy I have alot of time on my hands and am on the computer alot. HOPE THIS HELPS1111

The starter edition is what it says it is. Kind of like a test drive and it is not the same as the paid version, but it does provide protection. You can get Spyware Doctor, and Spyware Doctor with Antivirus.

If you do not want the SD with AV, you can use Avira for antivirus.

The you can augment you scans with Malwarebytes antimalware standalone scanner.

That should provide you reasonable protection. You should do the scans at least weekly.

Spybot, Ad ware, Spyware Terminator are not quite the tools for the best protection. Just check the reviews.

Hi slystone,

The Starter edition of Spyware Doctor contains the full database for Spyware threats, there are however some Viral threats for which signatures are not included in the Starter Edition.

Paid users do get these additional signatures and "Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus" users get these plus additional Virus specific signatures.
As we move toward 'Malware' protection we will review and change the way we distribute signatures.

thanks, then the information that I posted is false? Right now most forums still feel that the starter version has been cut back to much this year, that's all i want to know. I have malwarebytes and Antvir antivirus, I just want to confirm yes or no. You see the post that i copied from a link on another forum. I won't be mad i never thought the starter edition was as good as the paid, but if the definitions have been cut then I'll pass. If you can't say because of PC tools rules then just say that, THANKS for getting back to me. I was looking to add a second piece of spyware and need to know before I download it.

I am not a PCTools employee, but from what I understand from reading the reviews is that it is a smaller database. A lot of older defs are not included.

If you do decide to have multiple protections, I recommend Spyware Doctor, ThreatFire and Avira. They work well together.
