I have several imaged Windows 2000 machines, and when I try to shut them down, the screen turns off, but the PC light remains on. It's a Compaq, and I have to hold in the power button for 4 sec to turn off. I've tried diabling all power mgmt options in BIOS & Windows 2000... Any ideas???

I have the same problem on a Gateway Solo 9300. I spoke with Gateway and they said to uninstall the Easy CD Creator plugin for Media Player 7. Did that and it worked.
But!!!!! Now I have a fresh OS install and I don't have Media Player 7 installed at all, and it still does it.

Hi Andy,
Are there some Compaq models with this problem? The reason I ask is because I support 3rd party software and have been unable to replicate this problem. My customer has Compaq workstations with the NIC on board.

I am not aware of any models with this specific problem but I do know that the Compaq BIOS has options for configuring the power button where it will switch off only when holding it for 4 seconds. If you just depress the power button the unit will go into standby.
My original interpretation of the problem was that the user was shutting down and was actually going into standby instead of powering off. Need more details on the fail mode before I can speculate any further.

GIVE IT UP! I HAVE TRIED EVERY POSSIBLE MICROSOFT SOLUTION AS WELL AS VENDOR SPECIFIC "FIX AND TO DATE I STILL SEE THE PROBLEM. TRY NOT CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK AND SHUTTING THE SYSTEM DOWN--I BET IT WORKS AS IT SHOULD. I THINK, ON SOME NETWORKS, THE WORKSTATION IS TRYING TO ANNOUNCE ITS SHUTDOWN TO THE DOMAIN AND SIMPLY GETS HUNG UP. I HAVE LOOKED AT THE NIC WHEN THE SPLASH SCREEN IS UP AND IT IS GOING CRAZY AS IF IT IS TRYING TO LEAVE THE NETWORK BUT CANNOT GET A SUITABLE ANNOUNCEMENT ACROSS. I EVEN TRIED THE WINDOWS 98 SHUTDOWN PATCH--NO LUCK! IF YOU FIND A SOLUTION LET THE WORLD KNOW BECAUSE MICROSOFT AND THESE VENDORS DON'T THINK IT'S A PROBLEM.

MPASSA, are you saying you used the 98 shutdown patch on a 2000 machine or do you have the problem on a 98 pc? If it's a 98 pc then try a shutdown icon on your desktop with this command line minus the exclamation marks "c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe, exitwindows" Elsewise can't help sorry

I have this problem on my home built PC, AMD Athlon TBird 800 w/ FIC AZ11 motherboard. The light would stay on, even after I had turned the machine off. Guess what??? It was a BIOS issue. It wasn't implementing ACPI the way Windows 2000 thought it should. I updated my BIOS last month, and the problem goes away when shutting down from the start menu. If I use the power button to shut down, the light stays on, so I know that it isn't truly fixed per se, but it is definitely a BIOS issue. You should really harp on Compaq on this one, and get them to issue a BIOS update if possible. For future reference, whenever you have power problems, try updating (or demoting, for that matter, if the update caused the problem) the BIOS before giving up. You'll find that a quick BIOS update solves a great many things (you may have to repair Windows if it causes a blue screen, as W2K cannot dynamically change power management. The repair will reinstall Windows' power management functions, and will work properly once reinstalled.
