Many thanks to PCTools for Version SD 6.0.0.383 .
I have found out that my Outlook 2003 problems were due to a rare fault with a harddrive and raid controller card, which was writing data randomly over the disk, - this fault was a unique fault to the hardware and nothing to do with SD. PCTools have helped to find out if there was a problem with SD, none was found.
After a new controller card , format and O/S re-install all of the problems have been fixed.
