Twice now SD has crashed after completing the update- during the exit
after a reboot a check for updates shows I'm current
are these incremental updates or is 5mb usual?
If usual I'll do it at a quite time
4.1.1 recent installation replacing Counterspy which replaced pest patrol
SD would not run/ crashed so I ran reg cleaner and removed about 300 old entries
SD then installed
scan successful
now the update challange

Hi
Is there any reason why you have chosen to use SD version 4.1 rather than 6.0?
What operating system do you use? Any other security software?

cacheman
1 mb ram
firefox v2 with script blocker
norton systems works without AV

Hi
That explains version 4.1! Interesting behaviour. Unfortunately there are no incremental updates in version 4.1, that was introduced in version5+ which doesn't work with Windows98 :( 5MB is about right for the daily definitions though. Do you have OnGuard enabled?

Yes
the reason I'm using SD is for the real time protection
I DL latest version and closed all open user apps
same problem not only SD crashed out but explorer, taskmanager etc
Let me point out that this is NOT a big problem if I update right before shutting down for the night anyway :)
Next time I am going to disable the "on access" part of AVAST as it is undoubtedly trying to scan the update process
We'll find the conflict
I can always install System Safety Monitor

Hi
I'm not sure why that is happening. Does this happen with OnGuard off?

I just tried to update but I am current so any tests will have to wait
Interesting

You are up to date message appears
to exit click "finish"
I click finish
SD checks for updates again
repeat

I'll try with Avast, Win patrol, etc off next
then your suggestion
good night and thanks

HI
just ran update with avast off
after fresh reboot
got to the end box where it said something about program updated and on the next line
restarting program
that's when the exception hit

SD asked for an e-mail report
to here>>
sdexceptions@pctools.com <sdexceptions@pctools.com>
date/time : 2008-09-03, 13:07:42, 170ms

FYI
I had shut down spyware doctor to install something else and when I restarted form start>programs a similar crash happened

madExcept version : 2.7g
exception class : EFOpenError
exception message : Cannot open file c:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat.

I'll try it with your suggestion tomorrow

I shut down SD to install something else and when I restarted with Start>Programs similar crash occoured
after reboot SD started normally

Hi
It could just have been that first update needed a system restart, but couldn't initiate it. Further updates should be OK, let me know if you are still having problems.

Thanks Matt- the restart after update problem as been rather consistent- I am trying to hack at fixes
should I expect a response from the two robo reports SD sent itself?

Is there a way to download the update to a file and install manually?
I am thinking I could close the AV and Firewall after the download but before the install
AT least there would be less crashed out

thanks

Hi
should I expect a response from the two robo reports SD sent itself? No, these go straight to PC Tools. However, I think development of SD version 4.1 is no longer a massive priority as very few people still use Win98 :( I understand your predicament.
Just out of interest, what version of ZoneAlarm do you use?

wyrmrider

zone alarm 6.1.744 although I think the previous version worked just as well or better
I think I'm going to switch
I did not try and update yesterday
I updated flas then ran ccleaner and SD popped up with the send a report box
so I did
SD then disappeared from the tray followed "...has encountered a problem and had to close messages-- so I shut down- successfully- saves running disk doctor

Hi
Well by the sounds of things, there is a conflict there somewhere. Windows 98 is unfortunately well known for not being the most stable of operating systems too.
This may sound unfair, but upgrading your operating system should be a major priority for you as Microsoft is no longer supporting the Win9x family.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
