Excerpted from Q134841 - Computer Powers Down When You Shut Down Windows @ Microsoft

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Shut Down command on the Start menu to shut down Windows, your computer may automatically power down after displaying the message "Please wait while your computer shuts down."

CAUSE

This behavior is an Advanced Power Management (APM) feature. There is no way to change this behavior. The hardware powers down in response to a software request. This behavior occurs only on computers with a Plug and Play BIOS that supports APM features.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is precisely my problem. I have heard from my bios manufacturer that there are registry keys which control this "software request", Microsoft's claims not-with-standing.

Command line prompts to Restart in DOS, Shut Down to DOS, and Exit to DOS (such as the "C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,ExitWindowsExec") are not the solution I seek.

What I seek to accomplish is to prevent my machine from COMPLETELY POWERING DOWN AND SHUTTING OFF when I chose "Shut down the Computer" from the Start Menu.

Once upon a time (before I upgraded my bios to support my AGP vid card and USB graphics tablet), I used to be able to close Win9x without having my machine completely power off.

I need my Win9x os to CLOSE down WITHOUT POWERING OFF MY MACHINE.

Are there any registry keys which can be added, modified, or deleted which will disable the APM commands to power off the Pc when closing down?

Any Assistance Would Be Greatly Appreciated...
