Ok got a question. We want to make a registry entry that would logoff a person at a specific time. We basically need to say that computer A is logged off at 11:00pm so that we know all files are closed.
Is there anyway to do this. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

blackride...
I don't know exactly about a registry entry but I had to do something very similar for machines where I work. There is a utility in the Win NT or Win 2k resource kit called Shutdown.exe. You can run that with various flags to force a machine to shutdown, reboot, kill all running applications, etc. I created a scheduled task to run at a specific time (7:30am in my case) and to run shutdown.exe w/ the flags so that the machines are rebooted and nothing was left running.
If you need shutdown.exe drop me a message w/ your e-mail and I will send it to you. I believe it may also be downloadable from microsoft.com.
Hope that helps

Ok how did you go about creating the schedule task? Did you use an AT command or something else?

You could use the AT command....but I actually just went through the Windows Scheduled Task Manager. In Win2k it is under Control Panel - Scheduled Tasks. Just set it up that way then open up the Advanced Properties and add in the flags you want.

Will the "shutdown.exe" give prior warning to a shutdown process so users can save information? Will it work on a W98 box? I am tryung to find a means to force a log out on W98 boxes on my home LAN to keep the kids offline after 10PM. If you think it can work and you can e-mail it to me, that would be great. My address is in my profile.

Yes you can set a delay period before it will shutdown or reboot the computer. During this time the message (that u enter) will be displayed on the screen w/ a timer counting down. This usually stays on top of everything but you can still interact with the computer.
I no longer have this tool as I have moved out of the IT world for a bit to persue other opportunities. I believe you may be able to download it from MS's site.
