When running a defragment, just about everyone says locked by another application or access denied. Also when trying to run a repair boot record for win vista, nothing happens, the start button is not even highlighted to hit. And isn't the repair and optimize pretty much the same as what is in Desktop Maestro?

It also says this when I try to run a defrag and my defrags always fail to allocate free space, even with Administrator privileges. Strange, any solutions PC Tools?

Hi Guys,

Usually Defragmenter skips files locked by other applications (usually by the System) with very restrictive shares. In such case DS reports such files as ‘Access denied, Locked by other application’. It is a usual thing for user mode processing of defragmentation operations. We are working under optimizing defragmenter’s algorithm, so it will be smarter in future versions and also we plan to include ‘Shadow defragmentation’ feature, when defragmenter will be able to process on system idle to keep file system out of fragmentation.

To make defragmentation more productive it can be scheduled on system boot-time. In this case less number of files will be locked (usually only limited subset of system files, like pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys, etc.).

Also have to note that “Quick” defragmentation is a simple algorithm and to meet more effective defragmentation it can be combined with consecutive call of “Free Space” defragmentation with running “Quick” algorithm again after it (in other words, for better results Quick-> Free Space-> Quick can be used for defragmentation). In future versions we plan to provide ‘Deep’ defragmentation algorithm which will be the smart combination of Free Space and Files/Folders defragmentation in one DS task.

Also about issue with Repair Boot Record (Fix MBR). It is not a clear behavior in the GUI (and we will change this somehow in future): There should be a Physical Drive selected for this operation, but not a Logical Disk.
