I recently bought a new computer and have been given a choice between Vista and XP.

I did some research online reading various articles comparing the two, or articles talking about just one and really can't decide on which is right for me.

I read that Vista had a lot of problems/issues when it came out but was wondering how is it now? Most articles I read were written in early-mid 2007 so was wondering if much as changed. I read that SP1 came out in March for Vista so and would like to know how things are running with it.

The new computer won't be used for too much high tech stuff, basically just school related, and other minor things like banking, shopping games etc. I heard that Vista has problems with running older applications and that might pose a problem. I got 2 younger siblings aged 9 and 13 and they got quite a few older games that they really spend a lot of time on, ones like Diablo 2, starcraft and what not.

School related well it will be used for all of us, ranging from the youngest (9 years) to my sister and myself (first year college and second year uni respectively) and was wondering if Vista comes with things that will make life a little easier for us.

The new PC I'll be getting has 4gb of ram and runs at 3.7ghz if that means anything. I read some stuff here just now and read that Vista only handles 3gb. I assume then XP would handle less?

Another thing that confuses me is the Vista 32bit version and the 64bit one. If anyone could shed some light on that it would be great. Does XP come in those two versions as well?

Sorry for the lenghty post but just got a lot of things that need answering.

Hi
Firstly - I am a Vista user, and I have to say I love it. Its quicker, safer and looks much better than XP.

You may have some issues with those older games, but running them in "compatibility mode" may help there (see this Microsoft article (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/bf416877-c83f-4476-a3da-8ec98dcf5f101033.mspx) for more information about that).

As far as I know, Vista will handle 4GB of RAM, but yes XP does handle less.
I would advise a 32-bit system, purely because nearly all programs run in 32bit, not 64bit. Very few games will run in 64bit (its a totally different system architecture).

Hope that helps
