My system running Win98 Se with many programs including MS Office professional edition (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook) was very unstable. I unwisely reinstalled Win 98 without doing anything else. I lost many links and drivers, but have recovered all but Office. Whwn I attempt to uninstall or install Office, I get a message "Windows installer - The patch package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer patch package" The CD is good as it will run on my second computer. My registry has many entries for the Office products and I suspect that it is big time corrupted. Any ideas?

I'm not sure, but try downloading the latest version of the installer:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/platformsdk/wininst/1.1/W9X/EN-US/InstMsi.exe

If that doesn't work, you'll have to COMPLETELY remove it. In Internet Explorer, go to Help>Online Support, choose the Microsoft Knowledge Base, then check the box that says specify an article ID number, then paste the article #'s below into the search box.
