Installing Hard Drive

I am trying to install a slave 20 GB Western Digital HD in a Sony Vaio PC. The first (master) HD is a 30 GB Maxtor. I can see and use the new Western digital when in safe mode but the system hangs when booting regularly. The Maxtor is formated into two partitions, C and D. When booting with the slave drive the Maxtor is C and E and the slave is D.

Any help out there?

In safe mode did you check device manager to find out if there were any conflicts?

Did you set the second drive jumpers to use as a slave. The maxtor comes as a mastor unit and will drive a secondary in that setting. Some wil not and when a second is set in both have to be changed.

With regard to drive letters, a drive will always precede a partition, therefore your drive letters will change to :
Drive C - Master Primary Partition
Drive D - Slave Primary Partition
Drive E - Master Secondary Partition
etc.
One point - do you have any programs loaded at startup which are on your original D-drive ?(the Maxtor 2nd partition).
If so, the shortcuts to these must now be changed from D to E.
This could be causing your problems.
