My IBM 570 laptop (Win NT 4.0 Workstation) has external floppy. When I use the laptop without attaching the floppy, the explorer is very slow. Even in applications when I open File selection dialog box, it takes a long time. Perhaps it is checking all the drives. When the floppy drive is attached, there is no problem.

How can I disable checking the drives every time I open explorer or File select dialog box?

Download and install Tweak UI from:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakui.asp
This will install into your Control Panel.
From here run Tweak UI, click on the 'My Computer' tab and deselect your 'A' drive.

Hopefully that will solve your problem.
