Hi there,

Thanks for a free alternative to other expensive antivirusprograms.

I'm quite happy about the low CPU iAntivirus uses while looking in the background, it's almost completely invisible, impressive!

I have a few questions:

1. Is there going to be support for Macro-viruses?
2. And Windows-viruses, trojans, etc.?
3. Why is iAntivirus installed inside the Program-folder and not in the Utilities-folder by default?
4. iAntivirus has to be started after logging in to stay alert and can be stopped very easy. Also by normal users. I would like to have it running for all users, even Guests and that it can't be turned off without the administrators-password.
5. It's also very visible in the Dock. Anyone can see it and it can be turned off too easy.
6. I tried MacSweeper and iAntivirus removes something from it (it says), but MacSweeper can still be run. What does iAntivirus do to it?
7. When I install MacSweeper by moving it to my Application-folder, iAntivirus gives an alert, but if I leave MacSweeper inside its DiskImage, it can be started without any alerts. Is this a bug or is it normal?

Thank you very much.

Hi JeePee, thanks for trying iAntiVirus!

Regarding your questions:

1. We are able to detect macro viruses, and will add signatures as required when outbreaks occur

2.The iAntiVirus database has been designed from the ground up to detect and remove Mac specific threats. This enables a high level of protection whilst keeping memory footprint and resource usage to a minimum. With this in mind, if there is enough demand then we may add detections (perhaps with the ability to enable/disable via preferences) for Windows malware.

4. Multiple user sessions are on the roadmap for a future version, thanks for the suggestion about requiring an admin password for shutdown.

5. In beta 3 the dock icon will be optional and may be disabled in preferences. The dock icon is there to alert when detecting infections and bounces when a scan has completed. We plan on adding support for drag and drop scanning, i.e drag files and folders onto the iAntiVirus dock icon to scan them.

6. Members of our malware research team are looking into this. We’ll post updates in the forum.

7. See answer 6.

Hi JeePee,

For number (6) is it possible to send us the sample and we'll investigate this :)
I'll send a PM with my email address.

Thank you very much for your answers.

Actually I don't care about Windows-viruses :D , that would make iAntivirus quite large. Ofcourse it would make it complete if it could and I might use it sometimes, just to be sure that I do not mail an infected file to a Windows-user, so it would be nice if you can turn it on and off. But for me it's not really necessary. :) In my opinion everyone should take care of its own security and any Windows-user should run an antivirus (or 2).

Intego (VirusBarrier X5) chooses to detect some Windows-viruses, the most common, they say, but that gives a false feeling of security and I have no idea what viruses they do know... It would be better if a program knows all viruses or no virus at all. That's what I like about iAntivirus, you are quite open in what iAntivirus detect and that's great!

Our MRC team has had a look at (6). It appears that there is a new variant of this threat. The virus database will be updated and made available on Smart Update shortly. Thanks for your help and patience. :)

You're welcome and thank you for the possibility to use iAntivirus for free. Will there always a free version available?:o

I'm nit-picking, I know, but I'd like to see iAntiVirus get installed in /Applications/Utilities by default and not in /Applications. I know its only 1 folder deper, but you would be surprised how many end-users avoid the Utilities folder, and thus are less likely to tinker with iAntiVirus (I work in Enterprise IT and I'm anal-retentive about where my apps live.). Please put iAntiVirus in Utilities!

I agree, this would be the best place for iAntivirus.:)
