Okay have a copy of XP Home with COA etc. It has been used on a couple of builds and has required a couple of re-installs. Just tried to activate this latest install and was told I have reached my activation "limit"......

Okay what is this and how does one get around it or am I been grabbed by the short hairs by M$?

This page may be of help:

Reading the EULA/End User License Agreemens shows that legally the OEM version can be installed only on the hardware it came with, the Retail version can be installed on a second REPLACEMENT computer after removing from the first computer. If the OEM disk is 'branded' it can be installed only on that brand of computer and sometimes only certain models.

"It has been used on a couple of builds" Depending on the version, that may have been illegal in itself as the activation recognizes certain identities of the hardware it is installed on, several changes makes a new computer in the eyes of the activation process.
