I have successfully upgraded to SP3 and although Spyware Doctor loads on startup and runs quite happily in the background, as soon as I open the software it hangs. The only way of recovery is to power off. Any suggestions?

From a previous post. Try this. I hope it works.

I have found that the freeze ups are more due to XP SP3 than SD.

Check this site out.

I had the same issues and this fixed it.

Hi,

This link has an error 404.

Haapy copied an incomplete link :p
Here is the complete link from one of his post - http://www.technibble.com/how-to-fix-svchost-using-100-cpu-memory-leak/

The link is for a different problem, my PC does not slow down on start up and svchost.exe does not use up memory. I will explain the problem better:
I boot up the PC, Spyware Doctor loads okay, does the automatic update and runs happily in the background showing the occasional alert message. My PC runs fine with minimal CPU usage.
When I open up Spyware Doctor it hangs instantly. Task Manager shows no abnormal CPU usage but has Spyware Doctor as not responding. I try to end the task and get an error message saying closure is not possible because the application is locked. I then hit the power button and re-boot.
Any help appreciated.

Interesting! This is what I'm seeing with PCTIS since this morning's update. PCTIS is running in the background. I open the GUI - it freezes. Task Manager shows 'Not Responding' but CPU usage is low. However, if I wait for a while PCTIS will start running again by itself. Just tried an Intelliscan -froze at 1%, started again, froze at 7%, started again and after 25 mins actually finished. After a few more 'frozen' moments, I finally got it to finish and close. I thought it was my PC about to die of old age, but it seems other people have the same experience. Any ideas anyone?
PS This is my XP SP3 PC.

It always hangs - I think it's caused by attempting to update (when I have no network connection, it hangs, or with Wi-Fi connection too - perhaps Wi-Fi initialized later (after logon?)...

Works fine with user with no admin rights - cannot update, so does not try to update (?)??? Not quite sure whether this is it....

I would get rid of SP3. It ruined my last computer, along with probably millions of others. I had to buy a new one,and would never install SP3 again. If you had an AMD processor or a Compac brand machine SP3 was death to them.Try removing SP3,why suffer with it? S.D. gives great protection, better than anything Microsoft will ever make. I've personally found Windows Defender utterly useless, and it does clash with some Anti-malware products, which recommend to remove it. Does SP3 include Defender?
Just my own opinion only, not an experienced opinion...:D

Hmm...I have six computers with AMD processors running XP SP3. No issues. I kind of agree with trappermike regarding Windows Defender.

The Spyware Doctor issue could be due to not having enough I/O stack space for both Spyware Doctor and whatever other security and/or system backup programs you have installed, and/or having multiple internal and/or external hard drives, and/or having multiple drive partitions, and/or having an internal USB card reader installed. The low level drivers for all that stuff eats up stack space.

Merge the following registry setting to XP's registry, reboot, and see if it resolves the problem. Save the stuff between the asterisks to your desktop as a file called IRPStackSize.reg and then right-click on it and merge it into the registry and then reboot. Hopefully this will resolve SD freezing when it tries to run a SmartUpdate or possibly freezing while trying to perform a scan.

One solution that fixed every AMD PC with SP3 problems is updating the BIOS.

Thanks! Great to know,my old computer is still sitting here crippled. The nasty part of SP3 was it did not completely install,so you could not find it in your list of installed programs to remove. Microsoft later said "Well uh duh,if you had a Compac brand machine or an AMD processor the Update may not have worked"...They didn't know?!! They offered no fix. Rumours said it was an attempt to sabotage XP machines to help sales of the despised Vista.
I would like to use my old computer again,it was a good system.:(

Please explain what I need to do to get my old machine runnin' again, many thanks!:)

For the BIOS update, go to your manufacturers web site, go to drivers and downloads or something like that.

Make sure that you use your correct model #, better yet use your service tag (that is what dell calls it).

Then download and install the latest BIOS for your PC. Instructions should be included.

Then try SP3 again.

See if that works.
