Dear PC-Tools,

The smart update version for your product is not working at all for me. When I click on smart-update it shows me the first window where I can click next to check the server for updates.
After I click next here, it shows this screen and immediately shows a failed screen telling me to try again later.
(see screenshot: Error (http://www.xs4all.nl/~jelma/error.jpg))

I have tried several things, but cannot seem to get it to work. I tried reinstalling Spyware Doctor but it still isn't working. I have also turned off my firewall (McAfee) but it still didn't update. Too me it looks like it cannot reach the update server at all, and it has been like this for over 4 or 5 days already.

I'm also running Spyware Doctor on another machine in my home network,. I just reinstalled it on this machine and Smart Update ran, downloading a list of updates though it seemed slow. After turning off OnGuard the slowness was gone, this PC is also running McAfee. The updates completed and the version is now up to date on this second machine.

On the first machine the problem still exists though.
Is there perhaps a port on my router I need to enable? Or is there anything else I could try?

(Both machines are running Windows XP, 1 is still on SP2 and the other one is now running SP3. I'll check back to answer any other questions you might have for me.)

Hi
Is the computer with smart update troubles on XP SP3?
Do you have any nVidia chipsets in either computer? As these are known to block access to smart updates.

The computer with the Smart updates not working is the computer with XP SP3. I also believe it has a motherboard with Nvidia chipset. If this is the reason smart updates aren't working, is there anything I can do about it?

Lets try the easiest option first, nVidia:

Hi,

I've seen the same error few days ago and the only way I able to make Smart Update to work again is..
1. Shutdown Spyware Doctor
2. Move out the signature files from its folder (the old and new signature files). You can try to move it to your desktop.
3. Open Spyware Doctor after moving out the 2 signature files (old and new). It will notify you that there's no database, just let it update and you should get the update again.

You can now safely delete the old and new signature files when you succeeded in getting the new signature updates.

Not sure if that will work for you but it worked to my XP SP3 with NVIDIA graphics card but not NVIDIA motherboard.

Hope this helps.

Donnab: I have no idea which file(s) contain the new and / or old library, tried a few but don't think I got the right one(s).

mjq424: Thank you for the link, I turned off the network manager and hit Smart Update. Now my version is up to date again. Do you happen to know if it is safe to keep this Nvidia Manager thing off?

Hi
I've been doing a little light reading around the topic and it seems that it is perfectly safe to remove the NVIDIA Manager, however, some people have had great difficulty doing so.
If you look at the following page, it describes a method of removing the software, all you need to do is download the correct drivers for your system (in step 2):

Hope that helps

And again thank you for the link. After reading the contents of that page I came up with a solution that was really easy:

I opened the windows Add or Remove Programs utility (in the Control Panel), scrolled down till I saw NVIDIA software and then clicked remove behind the Network Acces Manager thing (which was in the last).
After deinstalling and rebooting, smart update is working perfect. So my problem is solved. Thanks for all the help.
