I was having problems with 3 PC's locking up at boot and /or shut down. This started after installing XP/SP3.
I decided to Uninstall UPHClean - Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. This was designed to help unruly shut downs.
The system now seems to be performing as it should. This also seemed to have a positive impact on the Outlook issues (slow reading/hanging, etc.).
I have checked the error logs... no errors or warnings.
Interesting that Microsoft warns to make sure that this is not installed with Vista. Perhaps XP SP3 should have the same warning.
