OK, I build my uncle a computer...a good one.

Athlon 900mhz
Win2K
40gb h.d.
16mb TnT2 Vanta Video
Biostar M7MKE m.b.
128mb SDRAM

I restarted, shut down, played 3d games, etc... no problems. I ship it to my uncle. He powers it on...gets to the first Starting Up screen, afterwards, the screen goes black. I tried helping, but with no ammend. He can get to the desktop through Safe Mode, but every time he boots normally, he gets the black screen. First, I thought it may be his monitor(5-6yrs. old), but even at the lowest resolution, color, he still can't boot normally.
I'm assuming it's a startup file, that's corrupt or something. Has anyone ever gotten this? And would a re-install or repair installation, help any? I've gotten blue screens, and solved the prob, but never a black screen =).

Let me know if anyone can help. Thanks.

Adam

I have the same problem. System is an older Celeron 300(@433) running on an Abit BF6 board. 32mb TNT2 ultra (diamond v770).

It worked great for over a year, at least 6 months on Win2k. Problem happened after I took out the TNT2 to use in a Duron system I had just built. When I went to put the card back in the Celeron PC I get nothing but black screen after the initial Win2K splash screens. Safe mode does work though. Put the card back in Duron system - works fine. Celeron system now has PCI TNT2 Vanta 16mb working great.

FAQ on Diamond web-site says TNT2 needs an IRQ assigned to VGA set in BIOS. I don't think I tried this when I was troubleshooting it.

When I get some free time I might try this. You might want to verify this in your BIOS. Also, is your card AGP or PCI?

I am having the same problem after changing my monitor settings for playing games.
I boot, windows me flashes, then my monitor says frequency too high and shuts down.
I tried troubleshooting, no dice.
I attached an older 14" monitor and it worked just fine, no problems. I am on the internet now.
It's settings somehow aren't adequate for that monitor or it is malfunctioning. Keep me posted, if I figure out a resolution I will let you know

It was the monitor. A new one fixed the problem.
