View Full Version : painfully slow SD 5.5.1.322

With OnGuard switched on it takes 2 hours to perform 4% of a full system scan. With OnGuard switched off, it completes 100% of the scan in less than 2 hours (ie a 25 times speed up). Is this expected ? It seems to halt on small files for 30 seconds with zero hard disk activity and almost zero cpu usage. It makes no difference if I untick the low priority option.

I have also noticed that with OnGuard switched on, web browsing is painfully slow and opening and closing word documents is very slow.

I am also running BitDefender v10 Build 247. I tried switching off the Antispyware features of BitDefender and it had no effect on the speed.

I have seen a few other similar posts with earlier versions of SD and could not see any obvious resolution.

I am running XP SP 2 on a T2600@ 2.16Ghz and 1GB RAM.

If this can't be resolved, I will proably delete SD and write off the expense.

I hope you can help.

Regards,
Pete.

The scan is taking alot longer then it should. If you have "many files inside archives (zip, chm, jar, etc) then these will be fully checked and hence scan times will increase". However, its weird behavior if you disable/enable Onguard which changes the scan time as this shouldn't affect the scanning from what I know.

Does Bitdefender have real-time protection? Make sure thats disabled and enable kernel compat mode in SD. I also remember seeing problems with bitdefender, but this was a while back and haven't heard of anything recent.

One suggestion is to temporarily disable File Guard and see if this helps, hopefully this helps with Web browsing to, because it seems SD and Bitdefender may play a role by doing a certain activity in the background, like constantly monitoring or conflicting some how causing the slow down.

You could also try running scan in safemode, this will determine if there is indeed a conflict. This is probably the best thing to try.

Thanks for the reply

>Does Bitdefender have real-time protection? Make sure thats disabled and enable kernel compat mode in SD

It does have real-time protection. I don't really want to turn this off permanently because it will reduce my anti-virus protection.

I gave this a go. In safe mode, OnGuard is switched off. The program refuses to switch it on. Therefore I can't perform your experiment.

This would be the reason why your computer acted that way. You should not run two real-time protection at one time, as far as I know this will always cause the trouble. So just stick to Bitdefender's realtime protection for now, since you don't really want to turn that off. :p

I was just about to say what Ditto posted  What could be happening is when you run a scan with SD and you have the real time protection on more than 1 application, they are probably also monitoring the same areas, causing conflicts with each other, since its doing the same thing, which can have the effects of slowing down your PC during a scan and general usage. It is always advised to run only one real time protection from whichever software you think will protect you best and use the other products as an on demand scanner.

Just went through another thread and saw that OnGuard cannot be activated in safemode :o

I see. I must say that this is not a very impressive situation. It seems like I can have real-time virus protection with BitDefender OR real time spyware protection with SD but not both.

As a bit of constructive criticism to PC tools, I would recommend that they purchase the top 10 anti virus packages and produce a matrix of which of the anti-virus packages (with every feature switched on) works fine with SD (with every feature switched on).

I would have thought that this is essential information for any prospective customer.

FYI, I have decided to give up with SD.

Pete.
