Cloned win 98SE onto a new computer with AMD64 twin core and 4GB memory.

When boot it it say there is not enough memory to start windows, remove any surplus drivers from autoexec.bat and config.sys. It stays at the black sreen, cli, dos.

Have been told that win goes mad with 1GB of RAM or more and there's nothing to be done save to physically remove most of the memory.

Is this true or is there a way to get window? TIA.

Actually, Win98, Win98SE and WinME all have problems with more than 512MB installed RAM regardless of what the motherboard supports.

Win98, Win98SE and WinME most likely have problems with the 64-bit CPU/Central Processing Unit, weren't readily available at the time of Win98, Win98SE and WinME. You'll need a 32-bit CPU which also means a supporting motherboard. There's times when the hardware outdoes the software or the software outdoes the hardware, just one of facts of computing.

One could use VirtualPC in WinXP or WinVista and install Win98, Win98SE or WinME in it.

Huge thanks, BertImmenschuh. Thought of some sort of software computer myself - don't know if there is a free software such thing?

Hi Tia,

Win9X can't handle trying to address more memory than 512MB. Microsoft, thinking ahead, has provided an option to limit Win9X memory usage. All you need to do is to boot into Safe Mode, click Start, then click Run. In the run box type "msconfig". This launches the System Configuration Utility. Under the General tab, click on the "Advanced..." button. This will pop up a new window titled "Advanced Troubleshooting Settings". Then put a check mark next to "Limit Memory to" and then type in "512" in the box next to "MB". Click Apply and Ok as necessary to get out of msconfig. Windows should tell you that it has to reboot the computer. I am not sure if you get this message in Safe Mode though. In any event, Windows now should start up normally since it has been told to only use a maximum of 512MB of RAM.

:)

Woops! I didn't notice the date of the thread. I think it popped up because a spammer had posted in it, but the spammer's message is now gone.
