First off I am very frustrated.

I purchased spyware doctor with antivirus and installed version 5.5.0.204 hoping this would solve my many problems with the previous version.
I've fixed my problem with it not starting after a reboot and it does not appear to be slowing down my computer as much. However..

First off utorrent worked flawlessly prior to installing spyware doctor. I opened Utorrent and it worked fine the first time, then as soon as I closed it and tried to reopen it said that uTorrent is running, but not responding. Please close all uTorrent processes and try again. I tried uninstalling it and re-installing it and restarting the computer but when I try to use it or try to open it it shows that message. I have also tried to go to task manager and tried to end the proccess but it wont end it it will just stay there. so..

I went to their website (http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#My.C2.B5Torrent_freezes_locks_up_sometimes _and_or_uses_100_CPU)
and it says this..
Spyware Doctor 5 causes µTorrent to freeze when installed. The only fix is to uninstall it, or roll back to version 4 of Spyware Doctor.

This is unacceptable and very disappointing. I've purchased the antivirus version so I don't think I can even roll back. I have also read that the same thing is happening for bittorrent. Anyone else having this problem? Is there a fix for this coming or should I ask for my money back before my first 30 days is up?

Also my computer has had trouble logging off the past two times so I have to unplug it but this could be unrelated.

Please Get back to me mods...thanks.

Hi tailgator133,

We tested µTorrent version 1.7.6 with SD+AV version 5.5.0.204 and could not recreate this problem. What version of µTorrent are you currently running?

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Could we get the following information:

1. PC Specs?
2. Internet Speed?
3. Download speed from uTorrent?
4. Could you also try disabling OnGuard when downloading?
5. Do you have kernel compatibility mode enabled? (settings-> general)

Thanks for responding so quickly. I'll try to answer the best I can I'm not the most computer savvy person.

I'm currently using version 1.7.7 of utorrent (edited this but is now correct)

1. Microsoft windows XP Media center edition version 2002 service pack 2
dell dimension dv051 intel(r) pentium 4 cpu 2.8 ghz 2.79 ghz, 248 mb ram

2. Internet Speed? download at 3483 kb/s upload at 537 kb/s

3. Download speed from uTorrent? I'm not sure how to answer this because it depends on the number of seeds and the torrent i'm accessing

4. Could you also try disabling OnGuard when downloading?

5. Yes I have kernel compatibility mode enabled

I succesfully downloaded a torrent earlier today and closed the program, then when I tried to download another one it said the message I put in the previous post and I couldn't open the program even though I could see it running in the toolbar...just to be clear. I'm going to try to reopen it without onguard and then I'll edit the post.

Also I doubt I'm the only one if utorrent has it in there faq on the website

Running SD V5 or 5.5 with LESS than 512Mb RAM, is a dead end!

I am using utorrent version 1.7.7. Others online have said the problem started after the update from 1.7.6. The program will open then freeze and refuse to function. Even after uninstalling utorrent it still was running in my task manager processes. I was unable to open firefox or turn off the computer without unplugging. After rebooting the process was gone

Is it true I don't have enough ram for spyware with antivirus 5.5? I can't downgrade to a previous version because of the antivirus so should I just give up and get my money back?

Just at start, the SD 5, 5.5 pulls about 170Mb of RAM. How much is then left for the other apps including Windows?
I only see two options:
1: Increase RAM (You will need it anyway!!) Go to a local computer rep shop, You get another 256 chip for next to nothing.
2: SD 4.1 + AVG Free

Thanks for the info tailgator. We've managed to recreate the problem with utorrent version 1.7.7 and will be investigating this further. We'll also be setting up a test pc with 256mb of ram and will update you on our findings :)

Thanks guys for all the help! For now I'll install SD 4.1 + AVG Free and look into increasing my ram. i would like to run the version I paid for though so keep me posted on the utorrent situation.

Also if you find that the program will not be able to run on 256 ram (which I suspect it won't) will buying another 256 chip be adequate? Just let me know once you've figured everything out. Thanks again.

512Mb RAM is what I recommend as minimum. You should even have a look in the allocated PF size and perhaps have that increased. A good program is Process Explorer (free) to monitor Your system resource usage. A bit expanded compared to the task manager and gives You a much better picture of the situation.

ram is ridiculously cheap these days, i recommend you use check what's the maximum you computer can support and just get that, even 2gb is only £30ish.

I'm a bit interested in A Chen's 'test PC' with 256 RAM. Has it booted up yet?

i think that less ram is your issue.utorrent needs alot of ram and so does SD so what i think you should do is but another ram stick say bout 1gb should do the trick. :)

The next build will resolve the issue with Utorrent :) Strangely enough, we tested Utorrent on the 256megs or ram test pc with SD standalone and couldn't recreate this issue. But managed to on another PC  But all in all, I'll give you an update once this version is released :)

Anthony,

I've just encountered this freezing problem while using the "Starter Edition" version of Spyware Doctor (Product Version: 5.5.0.204) that comes with the Google Pack product. The most recent version of uTorrent and the most recent version of Vuze (Azureus) both refuse to run successfully. Instead, uTorrent or Vuze starts a process, visible in Process Explorer, but never displays an associated window. At the same time, internet connectivity is cut off: For example, Firefox begins timing out when attempting to load new pages. The uTorrent or Vuze process cannot be killed. The only fix is to reboot the machine.

I realize that perhaps I should not "look a gift horse in the mouth"; the Starter Edition does after all come for free with Google Pack. On the other hand, I presume that you wish for it to work correctly, both for the sake of your users and to help form a good impression of your product. (I myself am considering upgrading, now that I'm familiar with the product. I also have been referring other people to the Google Pack version as something they can try before they buy.)

As it currently stands, the Starter Edition version in Google Pack (5.5.0.204) is incompatible with these most popular bittorrent clients. Perhaps you would consider upgrading the Pack version to at least 5.5.0.212; the comments in this thread seem to indicate that 212 fixes this freezing problem.

Thanks and regards

My Spyware Doctor configuration:

Product Version: 5.5.0.204
Database Version: 5.10950e
Version is Current
Last Scan was 5 hour(s) ago
Last Update was less than 1 hour ago

Google Updater does not report an updated version being available.

Hi pasbesoin,

The version you have installed is a very old one of SD ;) The latest for Spyware Doctor Google Pack is version 6.0.0.362. Please upgrade to the latest version :) and see if you come across any problems.

Thanks very much for the quick response. My installed Spyware Doctor has not updated itself in terms of version, although it does periodically report updating its database, and my Google Updater is not showing a newer version as being available.

I'll fiddle with Google some more and see whether I can get Pack or the Updater to offer me that newer version. It sounds like that is indeed what I need.

Once things are financially a bit better, you'll probably get some business from me. ;-)

No problems :)
Normally when a new version is out, you'll need to reinstall the newer version. Some updates will upgrade you to the latest version available, but majority of times you'll need to do this manually via the PC Tools website :)

I succeeded in updating my version of Spyware Doctor Starter Edition (via Google Pack) by starting at the PCTools website, clicking the button to download the free/Pack version (routes to google), and then working with Pack / the Google Updater.

Apparently, I may have blocked Google Updater at my software firewall, so that it did not know that an update was available.

Long story short, I am now at 6.0.0.362 . Initially, I could get a uTorrent window to open but all connectivity would then cease. However, today I was able to use uTorrent successfully. (Maybe for the last time: I simply needed one file I couldn't find elsewhere.)

By the by, I let Google Pack update a couple of other things, including the Real Media Player. This was a bad idea; Real (silently, I believe) installed a Firefox extension that slowed the browser enormously -- apparently, it pre-emptively scans each page for "downloadable" media. Entirely off topic, but I'll toss in a heads up to stay away from that extension; it really bogs things down.

I knew better, but I was tired and I dropped my guard.

Thanks again, Anthony. Appreciate the prompt response and help. :-)
