I just replaced an older 2x2x24 internal cd-writer with an HP cd-writer 9350i (10x4x32). Windows recognizes the drive but whenever I put a cd into the drive, I get the blue screen of death with just the message, Error 0D : 0028: 00000003. Explorer crashes and the system freezes. I thought it might be the drive, so I put the old drive back in and now I get the same error with that drive. (My CD Rom works just fine). I have the CD Rom configured as the Secondary master and the CD writer as the Secondary slave. Any ideas?

Sounds like a driver problem. Is the error code 0D or D0 ? D0 indicates a corrupted driver.

The error code is 0D. It uses the standard windows drivers.

Is it NT you are using? I have seen this type of issue with DVD's that use the standard Microsoft ATAPI.SYS driver in NT. Try setting your drive transfer mode to PIO to see if this is the same problem. If setting it to PIO fixes the problem and assuming you have an Intel based platform you can download the Intel ATAPI driver from the following link

Hope this helps

I forgot to put my configuration in the original posting. I am running Windows ME on a AMD Athlon 650mhz system. I did switch the drive to PIO with no success. Your suggestion of downloading intel drivers clicked the light bulb on and I just went to the AMD site and found some downloads specific to WinME that may help. Thanks

I applied the AMD updates but the results are the same. HP support says I have a hardware conflict and now I just have to determine what/where. Thanks for your help
