I'm not sure if I want to download Spyware Doctor latest version because after I have heard it slow your computer down, but on tests like PCWorld Spyware Doctor was #1. Any suggestions on if I should install or not, maybe tweaks to make Spyware Doctor not have memory usage issue.
Thank You.

Hi
Have you used Spyware Doctor previously? What are your system specs? Do you have any other security software installed?

Yes I have used Spyware Doctor previously, but it made my computer slow. WinXP Pro SP2 512 mb 144gb hard drive. I use Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.

Not everyone will have slow down issues. If you were here early last year, you would have seen all the problems and since have gotten alot calmer now and it seems that only a few users are experiencing slow downs as there have been alot of performance/bug fixes since then. Alot of the times these slow downs could also be related to 3rd party software and real time protection conflicting with each other.

Cheers,
Chippa

Hi
I do have to caution you about usng Spyware Doctor with Kaspersky Internet Security. I have heard rumours that they don't play together nicely, but I cannot confirm this.

As well as possible conflicts with Kaspersky, you don't have a lot of RAM, which may slow things down or may not. 512 mb is about the bare minimum.

Bare minimum ? It's all I've got !

It should really be enough if you don't have Vista, and just use your computer to access the internet, and some light duties (like MS-Office, maybe not the latest version).

I have a number of security programs installed, and I have plenty of RAM left (none of them are from Pctools, I learned that lesson when I installed the Version from Hell of the Spyware Doctor).

512 MB of RAM may be just enough if you are running Spyware Doctor, but tack on KIS 7.0 and other applications you might be running. I hate to say it but in todays world of technology you need at least 1 GB of RAM.

Although Windows Vista is garbage at the moment, it can support up to at least 8 GB of RAM I believe if not more. Personally, I have 4 GB of RAM but only 3.5 register because I am on XP.

What I am trying to say is that you are the minority right now. If you have 512 MB of RAM you have been left in the dust. You might want to consider upgrading your RAM if possible.

Lastly, I used to use KIS 7.0 and Spyware Doctor together at one point and I will admit they ran side by side but there was a slight bit of a slow down.

Im running PCTIS on 512 without significant problems. The 'secret' is mainly what You put in Your start-up folder. PCTIS pulls alone about 180RAM during start, and runs 'idle' about 25! One of the killers is the number of programs that search for up-dates at start-up.
I'm even running another Dell with 512 and McAfee security suite. A bit slow at start, but still works.

Agree with you there, it all depends on what you have on start up and as I have only 768 RAM myself I have very few programs that are in the start up folder - bascially PCTIS and Threatfire, but I can't say that with XP everything here is running at any speed. I have to agree with you sulliman24 - 1 GB is getting to be the minimum these days.

so... why does eset smart security start up fast and its built in with antivirus, antispyware, firewall, etc and it starts up fast and doesn't slow down computers when spyware doctor standalone takes up alot of memory.

Mine seems to start up right away and I'm running SD+AV. Maybe you have to many things starting up at once. Might want to go into msconfig and remove those unnecessary programs during start up. If you get all these programs to start at once, then of course it will be slow ;)
