View Full Version : Slow start issues with NIS2008
A fresh install of XP Home on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop. XP patched to SP2 plus all updates available. Norton Internet Security 2008 installed & updated. All working fine and very good speed (Celeron M 1.7GHz, 1GB ram)
Spyware Doctor 5 (activation version that currently only updates to 5.0.0.178) installed and updated and startup speed is terrible (>3 minutes) stopping at the welcome screen for a long time. This is a one-user auto-login. Tried disabling On-guard but not much better. Without On-guard the PC is marginally quicker when starting up but this loses ALL of the functions. Importantly, once started, Windows is very sluggish.
Any issues with NIS2008 at the moment or any suggestions?
Memory usage in taskman seems fine, here are the top 3:
svchost 28,132K
explorer.exe 20,980k
swdsvc.exe 8,188k

Hi
I would uninstall the version 5.0 that you are using and head straight to version 5.5 which has many performance enhancements.
Hope that helps
Wasn't sure if the latest activation version was 5.5, seems to be. Does this overwrite or is it a clean install required?

Hi
I sugest you a FRESH Install
And please use SD Standalone in order to avoid conflicts with NIS 2008
Hope this helps
Well it seems to have sped up the startup process a bit but SpyDoc reports it is starting permanently (if you hover your mouse over the tray icon). The On-guard settings are all enabled now except for the cookie guard.
@Vecchio:
Where is it reported that SD has a problem with NIS08 and can't be run together?

The problem you are experiencing with NIS and SD can be found in this thread - http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50228&page=3.
The developers have resolved this issue and the next build should fix this. You may also want to look at page 1 of that thread for more info.
Thanks Achen
Will the fix be an update that happens automatically or will it require a downloaded version update?

Hi
I can assume that from previous updates to newer builds, the recommendation will be to download the new version from the website and uninstall and reinstall. Most changes like this involve changing code in the critical drivers and DLLs which usually requires a reboot anyway.
Hope that helps
Just thinking of all my customers that have Norton and SpyDoc installed. It's really awkward to get compatible products these days as all manufacturers want to bundle similar features.

I'm in principle no fan of putting all 'eggs in one basket', but the old boarder line between anti-malware and anti-virus apps seems to have ended in a grayzone. Suits have their cons and pro's, the problem might be to find which one that covers Your needs. In daily life there is not much difference in protection whatever people say. I have been running quite some combinations and suits and never been in serious trouble caused by infections. The tighter the security, the more side effects like conflicts with other apps may appear. There is no one that fits all needs.
Running a suit at least You know where to go when things breaks down, then it is up to the vendors support to solve Your problem.

That's truly amazing. Is there nothing that is compatible with this program???
Maybe a suite is the answer because as Reodor says at least you know where to go when you have a problem. Finally, I think the solution is common sense and the best combination for each set-up and taste.

Hi
I know, it's a little ridiculous don't you think...not being able to have ANY other security programs installed  Many people have stopped recommending it because of it's "incompatibilities".
You are correct with your other comments, user preference is the highest on the list ;)
