View Full Version : Effect of Spyware Doctor on Steam games (eg HL2, TF2)

Spyware doctor 5.5.0.178 seems to be both a CPU and memory hog, with random increase in CPU usage in excess of 50% (almost all of one core)
I've noticed recently that when running I get less have 20 FPS (approx 18 fps)
Without spyware Doctor running I get near 40 FPS (approx 38 FPS)
Even with just onguard disabled it's still less than 30 FPS (29fps)
It seems Spyware Doctor is not "Game friendly", and the random CPU spike it does almost cripple some games
For reference I've tested this on 2 different PC's
Pentium-4 3.2GHz HT, and Pentium-D 3.2 GHz
Both with Windows XP SP2 (latest patches)
2GB Ram.
Graphics cards are ATI varients.
When given the lack of updates on the threads here about CPU usage, I;d probably no one will answer (or address this issue)

I feel yr pain here! However, can I ask why on earth yd want to run SD at the same time as a game? Personally, I shut it down when using Steam and restart when done.
I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with SD tho' and the threshold at which I take it off for good is being rapidly approached. The large virtual memory size is irrelevant as no swapping appears to occur ( I have 3GB RAM) and is merely a number in Task Manager.
However, my browsing with Kaspersky in both FF and IE7 has slowed considerably and I had to change from NIS2007 to KIS due to a bug with SD5.5
Still awaiting a fix BTW AChen.

yep I have never been able to play world of warcraft with SD installed, and the thing is I sort of do need to run it as WOW is rampant with people using keyloggers etc to get your account details. It's like playing on a 28.8k modem.

I didnt always need to shut it down, but now TF2 wants a bit more resources. And it seems SD doesnt like giving up its spikes in CPU, thus the game suffers

Yes, I have 2GB ram, and mostly free. The more worrying bit about SD is the random CPU spikes, often taking an entire core. This never happened with SD 4.0

I think the issue of CPU and memory usage has been constant on this forum since 5.0 was released, and despite all the threads, no fix has been forthcoming.
When my current licenses expire, I'm seriously considering looking at alternate software.
