I had the same problem. It was due to bitdefender which made the shutdown incredible slow.

What is bitedefender, does it come installed with vista? How to get rid of it? Thanks

it is an antivirus program - bitdefender antivirus (http://www.softspecialist.com/BitDefender-Antivirus-3988/BitDefender-Antivirus.htm).

I too, have noticed that Vista takes a long time to both boot up and FOREVER to shut down.

My Vista machine is a new Toshiba laptop and I suspect that there are unnecessary items that I can delete from startup, but so far, I've been unable to find a list anywhere that identifies what preinstalled startup items are absolutely necessary and which ones don't have to load at startup.

If my Vista machine is like my OEM XP machines, finding and stopping unnecessary crap from loading on startup should speed up booting up and shutting down, hopefully anyway.

If anybody knows where a good list of unnecessary Vista startup items, including OEM manufacturer's unnecessary startup apps, can be found, I would be grateful if you share the link!

I had forgotten that I posted this last september, but I found out my problem was my Yahoo Messenger that was holding up the Shutdown, so I fixed it and now it shutsdown much faster.
I think there is a misconception about startup programs. IMHO the startup programs are only the cause, when you had your computer for awhile NOT a brand new one, but if you want to fool with them you can place the question about startup items in Google window and you will get a site that tells you what are necessary and what are not, at start up.
I would not waste my time with a new pc with this, instead go here and try this >>>
