HP Pavilion XE873
Windows ME

Problem: Start>Shutdown
monitor immediately goes black
fans stay running
CPU apparently shuts down

Depressing and holding power-up button will finally turn system off, per usual HP tricks. When restarting system, Windows automatically initiates Scandisk because of "improper shutdown."

Incidentally, Start>Restart works smoothly, as per usual. Also, oddly enough, Start>Standby powers down completely, but then immediately turns power back on. Depressing and holding power-up button will completely power system down. In this case, on power up, Windows does NOT invoke Scandisk.

Have checked all possibly related Control Panel and SETUP settings to no avail.

What the heck am I overlooking?
