Hi,
I just installed the 4.1 update (13-11-2007) but now miss some OnGuard options such as Cookie Guard en IM Guard. I uninstalled the old version before installing the update and cleared the spyware dir. Are some functions now 'hidden' or have these been left out?

Hi,
Well finally used SystemRestore to go back to the situation before the update and ended up with two spyware doctor dirs:mad:. What seemed the old one had been renamed c:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor(2). Neither dir contained a working version.
Decided to copy the missing files from another PC - where the old version was still active - to c:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor and everything worked. Still, being the worrying type, I decided to uninstall this older version completely and install it again from an old install exe which I luckily had saved. This went well but I ended up missing some On Guard tools again:confused: Copied these again from the other PC and everything seems now to be in order.
I'll wait for some reaction before trying to update again.
Perhaps I should have installed the update over the older version in the first place? Phew. Another day gone by.

Dave

I have just tried to follow instructions to re-install v 4.1.0.1 to accommodate the 13/11/07 update.
I tried to uninstall and re-install but encountered problems when trying to delete the program folder. I received an error message as per the attached screenshot, which is self explanatory.
I then downloaded SWD over the existing file(This was probably intended).
After installing and running a custom scan I am left in the same position as davstar with elements missing in ON GUARD.
Surely NOT ANOTHER problem !!!!?.
Where do we go from here?, and how do I get over the uninstall problem of delating swpg.DAT to enable a proper install?.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Cubfox,
Sorry to hear you've also got problems. I came across this program for deleting 'undeletable' files.
http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/moveonboot.html
This might help.
Hopefully we'll get a reaction from PCT shortly.

Hi A Chen, I hope you are going to be pretty quick in solving this problem. My Quick Scan this morning highlited 21 infections as a result of the On Guard issue. This would not have occurred if the On Guard element was working.
I trust that it is not a case of "this issue is causing a problem lets remove it from the programme".
The only saving grace is the fact that sites can now be visited without site blocking. The downside is that there is no protection, the very purpose of the programme.

After todays Smart Update we are still missing Cookie Guard & ME guard.
It seems that although the elements exist , it is difficult to integrate them into the main programme, or am I being to pedantic?. When the update was installed the "down arrow" appeared under Site Guard but disappeared when the mouse arrow hovered over it. It is now gone!.
This aspect of SD has occurred previously.

I wrongly quoted ME guard . I should have indicated IM guard. Sorry for that.
Another quick scan today and another 20 infections which would have been stopped if Cookie Guard was working.
I think the DOCTOR needs a tonic as he seems to be under the weather!.

I have the new version installed, I didn’t have the uninstall problems. I have both the missing Cookie and IM guards there and working (well IM would but I have instant messaging removed from my PC so I'm not using that guard. Cookie guard was OK from the start, I got lodes of pop ups till I remembered to tell them to go away!

I have just completed an Uninstall of SWD (this time successfully removing the programme file from my computer), a Reinstall and custom scan.
I am still missing Cookie Guard & IM Guard in the ON GUARD section after a Smart Update to values indicated in the header.
Can anyone explain where I am going wrong.

Hawkeyelom,
In regards to the missing Guards in 4.1. PC Tools developers are working on these missing guards. But we have no time frame as to when these guards will be available. I was wondering you want to download the latest version of Spyware Doctor as we have these guards available for version 5.0
Cheers !!

in the first place. The cookie gurard seemed to be working Ok so why remove it???. You guys make no sense at times.
You remove something that works, then have no timetable to make it available again....no wonder so many people are angry with PC Tools and/or have left or not renewed.....Give me a break....

I am a little lost! I did a download from the earlier link to the updated 4.1, a clean uninstall before installing it. It says its 4.1.0.1 but has all the "missing" onguard parts. Is this the updated 4.1 or did I get an older version from the link? It was a different size to my existing download and under properties had version 4.1.0.1, as I recall my old one, now removed, had a lower version number on it.

You all know I am an occasional complainer, especially when not getting what I'm paying for.
The mystery is that ALL the Guards missing on your installations of SD 4.1 are NOT missing on my up-to-date SD 4.1+ version, and seem to be working OK! (IM Guard, Cookie Guard, Pop-up Blocker, Exploit Guard are all there!)
And, my PC is over seven years old (with 128MB SD RAM Upgrade to 384MB SD RAM, NVidia Video Card Upgrade, Upgraded from ME to XP, Home Edition SP2, Fully Updated IE7, additional 150GB Hard Drive D:/), which is why I have to stick with 4.1+.
So, why does my clunker PC still have them? (Where did I go wrong? Maybe I did a 4.1 upgrade on top of the existing 4.0?)
Since mine ain't broke, I hope what AChen promises will repair yours and does not break what works OK for any of the rest of us.
---> john7, If I understand you correctly, you are not really missing any of the above-mentioned Guards on your latest installation of SD Version 4.1.0.1.(?). Eveything you stated seems normal for an Upgrade/Update, including the number changes.
Best wishes.

Hi InvisibleMan & John,
I'm a little confused as to the download you are using. The latest version of SDv4.1 (http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/version4/) will include the following Onguard tools upon installation - Startup Guard, Browser Guard, Immunizer, Keylogger Guard, Network Guard, Process Guard and Scheduler. Once installation has completed and a Smart Update has been performed, it will download the missing OnGuard tools. (However, at this stage, Cookie Guard, Pop-up blocker, IM Guard and Exploit Guard are not available with the latest v4.1 and should be released sometime today - I will provide an update on this shortly)
When installing SDv4.1, could you please confirm if this has been downloaded from the link above? Is it possible that there is an older installation on you're PC, as the OnGuard tools such as Cookie Guard, Pop-up blocker, IM Guard and Exploit Guard are temporarily not available.

The above-mentioned components were NOT missing on my version of 4.1.0.1 until I did a Smart Update a few minutes ago. That Update said I was missing:
Latest SD Database (OK)
Lookup Table (?)
Popup Blocker BHO (?)
Popup Blocker Engine (?)
I downloaded the Smart Update. Then, the Popup Blocker option was NO LONGER within the ONGUARD TOOLS! Why did it disappear? It was just there prior to the Update!
How did it download (when it was not missing?), then disappear after it indicated it actually downloaded during the Smart Update? That is a new one.
As I stated in an earlier posting, I had hoped the fix would not break my installed version. The fix appears to have broken it. I will perform a complete uninstallation and reinstallation of 4.1.0.1, and report back.

I did a complete uninstallation of 4.1.0.1, including the Spyware Doctor folder from the Program Files folder, then a complete reinstallation of 4.1.0.1 (per AChen's instructions and link above), immediately followed by a Smart Update which downloaded the otherwise several missing OnGuard Tools components, including the Popup Blocker engine.
DataBase Version: 3.08660
Intelli-Sig's: 210929
But, the Popup Blocker Button is now missing from the list of buttons within the Onguard Tools! I'm right where I was in my preceding posting.
I may not be concerned if the Popup Blocker engine is installed and working (blocking popups), but hidden. How do I know now that the button has disappeared? Did the latest fix break my original working installation?

Like davstar I am also missing Pop-UP Blocker.
It took three Smart updates to get to this stage ( i.e cosecutively)

Now I have had another look I to am missing popup blocker!
After downloading a very recent popup blocker update for SD4.1, the popup feature in the On Guard settings has vanished. What on earth is going on?
Hawkeyelom

no pop up blocker
Sorry PC Tools. This is a dreadful performance. You must not allow users to download broken software. There was nothing wrong with the popup blocker but there sure is now - it doesn't work.
Are you guys deliberately trying to lose customers? It feels like it. SD4.1 is propbably the difference between quite a lot of customers sticking with PC Tools and going elsewhere, me for one. If it was the anti-keylogger feature that had been disabled, I would have walked away from PC Tools there and then.
This afternoon, SD5.1.273 seems to have munged my IP stack. Put it this way, I lost my Internet and had to resort to my Ghost backup (I took it immediately before installing SD5.1.273). I was then stupid enough to download the SD4.1 software updates.
I have to use SD4.1. SD5 doesn't work for me.

For users who have installed IE 6 and above, pop-up blocker has been disabled in the OnGuard tools. As IE 6 and above natively support their own Pop-Up Blocker we decided to disable it for these versions.

should have posted my guess, to prove it:) oh well being right is enough;)
Anthony, are you not aware that IE6 in Windows 2000 does not have popup blocking built in unlike IE6 with Windows XP SP2 which does. Please reinstate this feature. It were better that it had been left untouched and all IE6 users allowed to exercise their own discretion about which popup blocker to use. The SD4 popup feature worked well and reliably. Now I am groping for an adequate alternative and I do not like the Google toolbar.
Since none of the variants of SD5 work for me, you might at least have left me the popup blocker as a consolation. Now I have even been denied that crumb of comfort.

Users should also have been TOLD, I have IE7 popup blocker disabled as I was using the SD4 one!
C'mon PC Tools. Please put the old popup blocker back. It wasn't doing any harm and for some it did a lot of good. It was a very good popup blocker and I will now have to use an inferior one. It was much better than the Microsoft one in IE6 (Windows XP SP2) and IE7.
Life's a bummer. My dog died, my girl friend left me, my car got repossessed, I've been diagnosed with terminal haemorrhoids and now they've taken my popup blocker away! :(

This has been passed onto the developers and I will try to get back to you as soon as I can on this.
There is a bigger issue here. I am one of a number of SD4.1 users who are unable, despite best efforts, to be able to run any of the variants of SD5 without significant problems. I admire the products of PC Tools very much. The SD4 product line is wonderful and I for one would be happy to continue using it for the forseeable future. However, the inexplicable action last week of removing of a perfectly good and useful feature on the premise of an inadequate understanding of the features in Microsoft web browsers and the habits of users has eroded my confidence in the judgement of PC Tools and its willingness to continue to make available to me a useful anti-malware tool in the form of SD4.1.
I wouldn't go as far as to suggest that PC Tools are trying to drive users from SD4 to SD5 but that thought has occured to me. SD5 lacks a popup blocker and I wonder if some misjudged desire to standardise the two product lines caused the popup blocker in SD4 to be deactivated.
My three seat product license is due for renewal in four weeks. In my case at least, it is with great sadness :( that I must look elsewhere for protection as I plainly cannot renew while the present situation continues and it does not look as if PC Tools will admit an error of judgement and restore the popup blocker. Which feature is next for the chop? For all PC Tools's expertise in computer security, it is surprisingly inept when it comes to relations with customers.

Anthony,
The old PC I use has IE7 and N.I.S. providing some popup blocking. However, there have been frequent occasions when SD4.1 listed blocked Popups that were missed by any other application's popup blocking. Would that be because SD saw those Popups before the other security applications could, or because the other security applications missed them?
And, does SD's Popup Blocker slow down SD's speed of operation?
----
hake,
regarding your previous posting: Sorry to hear about your dog.
Does your wife know that your girlfriend left?
I would suggest riding a bicycle as a replacement for your car...but...
that won't work because of the other problem you mentioned! (Ouch!)
You could rest on a large (?) soft pillow until SD's Popup Blocker is returned.
Best wishes for us all. :D
The dog got better thanks.
The unwarned removal of the popup blocker has however caused me a lot of inconvenience. I have had a deal of trouble as a consequence of having to replace the very satisfactory SD4 popup blocker. This is very poor service. PC Tools should see things from the point of view of the customer and stop behaving in a high handed manner. PC Tools, are you in the business of gratuitously upsetting customers? It's a sure way to lose business. Just give me the b------g thing back.
