transfering files

I have a new computer and a new Vista. On the old computer I have XP. I have an ethernet modem with internet connection for both. I thought I could use the modem to transfer files from one to another. But so far I do not know how to make the computers see each other. I also have a crossover cable as I thought that would've been the fastest transfer. But I struck out there too. I forget how to connect two computers like that. I actually thought it was pretty much automatic as far as seeing the other computer.

I had wanted to save myself the trouble of actually physically installing the drives in the new computer and then transfering the files.

If anyone could advise me I would be more than grateful.

O.K. I figured out how to do that. It wasn't too hard. An external hard drive is by far the easiest for that task. But I still don't know how to connect two computers together. Maybe I'll find out at another time.
