According to my recollection of previous forum discussions, Kernel Compatibility Mode (KCM) is described as an option that allows SD to "play nice" with the Windows kernel so that SD's actions and other low-level scanning apps do not lead to memory address errors or other conflicts.
If PCTIS is the only security program on a PC (i.e. no actve scanning apps apart from its components), under what circumstances would KCM be recommended?

kernel compatibility mode should be disabled unless you have any conflict issues with other security software. But if you are using the PC tools IS on its own, then probably best to keep this disabled.

Hope this helps.
