If I shut down and restart I get Blue Screen Error msgs and others. If I restart Windows only, my computer restarts with no problem.

If I shut down my computer, it takes me hours to get back into Windows 98 SE.

I have seen Blue Screen error msgs like: FATAL EXCEPTION OE HAS OCCURED AT 0028:432570C4. Current application will be terminated. Then when I do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and restart I am sent to Safe Mode. I choose to shut down and restart and then see WINDOWS SAFTEY (forgot the rest) YOU MUST RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. Sometimes Windows will load there and other times I have to go back into Safe Mode the message says because WINDOWS DID NOT START CORRECTLY.

It is driven me bananas, Windows techs could not fix the problem. Just told me I had a hardware problem which a repair shop tech could not find.

Somebody please help me before the men in the white jackets come to take me away.

If you're using Win98 Second edition (4.10.2222A), here's a link to the Shutdown Supplement:

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp>http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp</a>

If its installed and not working correctly,

Fast Shutdown registry key is enabled.

The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is unchecked in Windows 98 Second Edition, your system may reboot instead of shutting down.

To resolve this issue, change the FastReboot value data from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Shutdown

NOTE: When you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, which addresses shutdown issues, the Disable Fast Shutdown option is no longer listed on the Advanced tab in Msconfig.

these errors can be very difficult to pindown.

Reads like it's a memory leak (windows is trying to use memory that is already taken by another process).
Possibly a corrupted device driver file? Maybe an appplication's file(s)?

Install anything (software or hardware) lately?

If you have 98 go to START/Run type in sfc and hit enter.

scan all system files for corruption.

how long has this been happening for?

Exactly at what point during the boot phase do these blue screens appear?

It could well be the ol' registry corruption!

Thanks for the post but shutting down is not the problem. Getting back into Windows is the issue.
