How do I make the Enter Windows Password screen stay after a reboot. This screen appears but the system continues to boot into the desktop without allowing you to enter username and password. If you LogOff then you can log in with your profile.
I've checked the AutoLogon in the registry as previous users have pointed out and it's fine. I've tried deleting all profiles and .pwl's and restarting. I've tried making my network connection both Microsoft Network Client and Windows Logon. I've also tried making the entry for the Key 'NoLogon' under the .DEFAULT. But it just doesn't work. By the way, even though Profiles are enabled the users aren't listed under HK_Users. Thanks for any help.

Go to the Network icon in Control Panel and verify the primary login is set to Client for Microsoft Networks, If that's OK,
Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon
create a new binary value called MustBeValidated
give it a value of 01 00 00 00

I think what you are really looking for is the Windows Family Logon, in your NetHood properties, add the service Windows Family Logon and make that the default, this should be exactly what you are looking for... although, something is still not right

Also, the MustBe Validated Regedit is meant to be a value of
00 00 00 01
well, thats what we use... :)<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by nadsoft on 02/22/01 00:13.</FONT></P>

Thanks for the help. I had tried the MustBeValidated value before as Windows Logon but couldn't log in at all because I'm not on an NT Domain. After spending 4 hours figuring out how to manually edit the registry I was able to get back in to Windows. So as suggested, I added the Client, Microsoft Family Logon and set the MustBeValidated to 01 00 00 00 and it stopped the automatic bypassing of the login screen.
Still have one small problem, which I believe is the underlying cause. It now stops at the logon screen but it gives an error that I haven't entered a username/password even though it didn't give me a chance to do so. Any idea what is causing Windows to try and log on automatically after a reboot. I tried setting AutoLogon to 00 00 00 00 and it just bypassed the login screen altogether without even showing it. I set AutoLogon to 01 00 00 00 and it's behaving the same as though this value wasn't even entered in the registry. Something is forcing it to automatically log on but I can't tell what it is.

okay well i search for network logon troubles on the MS KB
<http://search.support.microsoft.com/isapi/gosupport.asp?target=/directory/default.asp>
and article Q141858 seems to be what your problem is, read that and see where you go from there...
i think it says to try simply deleting the AutoLogon key altogether.

Thanks for taking the time to look. I had tried that before and did it again, still with no luck. I just don't understand what is causing it to try and log on without entering the user name and password on the screen.
