Rename Start Button

I recently installed a demo of Winboost 98. I renamed my start button and put my name on my task bar (next to the date and time stamp), which I thought was pretty cool at the time. Unbeknownst to me, the demo only lasted for ten days. I want to rename my start button to "start" and remove my name from the task bar but don't know how. I tried to reinstall the demo but the program won't allow it. Can someone please steer me in the right direction as to how to rename the start button and the task bar.

There is only one way to rename the start button that I know of: hacking explorer.exe You need to use a hexeditor to search and replace all occurances of the hex values for the current name (seperated by null chars, i.e. 15 00 5A 00 35 00 53 00 20) and replace it with the hex value for the word 'Start' seperated by null chars.

if i remember correctly, it has nothing to do with the registry, the program you used modified a program file directly, what i suggest is find a freind who has the exact same version of windows and replace (i think its) explorer.exe or taskman.exe probably Explorer.exe

hmmm i have 2 Explorer.exe but different sizes

ok make shure you replace the good ones like the one from C:\windows with c:\windows
the one from c:\windows\system with c:\windows\system

If your goal is to restore the start menu to it's origional configuration and the program ceases to function because it's past it's 10 day trial period, here's probably the easiest way to correct the problem: Change your date to 9 days before the program expired, and then run it. It should function fine, you go ahead and correct your start menu using this program, then set your date back ahead to the present day. After this, of course, you'll want to do the right thing and uninstall that piece of software...
