I've have a really weird problem that nobody has been able to solve and I
can't find info on. When I use MS Internet Explorer, and it tries to display
a JPG file, it displays as a colored snow. I click on the graphic and its
always a JPG file. I downloaded Irfan 3.33 freeware (a JPG Viewer)it
opens all of the JPG files quickly and without incident.

These are the hardware details:
My son recently built me a new computer, as follows:
FIC A11E Mother board
Duron 700
128 Mg RAM
15 Gig HD
NVida TNT Video board
Creative Labs Soundblaster audio card
Everything checks out and runs fine except for the JPGs.

I have traded video cards with a known good one, the same problem occurs (with all appropriate drivers). The network card has worked fine in the past on this network.

We loaded Windows 98 SE on a newly formatted hard drive, (2 times) did a windows
update, checked all the video and sound drivers so that there are current.

I have replaced the registry files in the root for both JPG and JPEG, I have
used the MS DOS utilities to scrub the registry and to repair any IE files
that were corrupted. I have checked for anything unusual w/ the system file
checker - nothing. Reinstalled the drivers, moved the hardware graphics
accelerater button to every setting, run the DirectX diagnoser, and I still
can't figure it out. Downloaded Netscape Navigator, it still scrambles the files. Downloaded CrystalBrowser, it still scrambles the JPGS. Updated IE to 5.5, repaired it using the built in repair program, still does it.

Any ideas on what to do next?

I updated to the Java and scripting software as suggested, no change. Yes, all the windows updates are already in. Riva TNT Video card (kind of old) with a new FIC Motherboard, could there be a conflict there?

Are there any flags in Device Manager?

Go to Start>Run, type msinfo32. Check the History radio button and look for clues.

Go to Start>Run, and type hwinfo /ui and look over the red text for problem devices.
