View Full Version : Hide the Network Neighborhood Icon

I've posted this question a few times, but no one could answer me. I REALLY hate
the Network Neighborhood Icon on the desktop & promptly delete it when I install
Windows, but sometimes I do have problems surfing the web & have to re-install the
damn thing again. While reading through the guide to try hiding this icon, it says:
"In addition, disables UNC capability from within the Explorer interface, including
the Start menu's Run command, UNC paths configured by the administrator in
Policies for shared folders, desktop icons, the Start command, and so forth. This
does not impair the functionality of the command line Net.exe command."
What is UNC & what does it mean my commands in Windows will be disabled?

UNC stands for "universal naming conversion" which basically means accessing a share or resource using the \\server\share format. The note in that tip refers to the fact that removing the Network Neighborhood icon will remove the ability to access resources using this format from explorer.
It should not affect web browsing except possibly if you are using Intranet resources or using NT domain authentication. What actually happens when you have problems surfing the web?

It's not to big of a problem, just when I click the little computers to check my connection, once in a while it'll stope sending & recieving bytes for about two minutes of so. I've called my ISP a few times, but no matter what we try, it still happens. I've learned to just deal with it & hide the damn Network Neighborhood Icon anyway.
But know I have a different problem that came up today. I like changing the icons on the computer (drives, printers, control panel, etc.) about a month ago I changed the Scheduled Tasks folder to an icon of a fish (I did name it Scheduled Tasks.ico). So today I changed all the icons back to the defaults & removed all icons I wasn't going to need anymore (which just happened to be all of the this time), & used a bunch of Spiderman icons (drives, printers, control panel, etc.), but for some reason when I try to change the Scheduled Tasks folder icon with my Black Cat icon (named Scheduled Tasks.ico), it reverts back to the fish instead of Back Cat's; & I have checked everywhere to make sure no inkling of the fish.ico exists anywhere. I even changed the Scheduled Tasks folder back to its default & turned off the comuter for a few hours, but still the same thing. The only way I get the icon of the Black Cat to show is name it something other than Scheduled Tasks.ico; not a big pain, but I'd really like to know why the folder keeps going back to the fish when there is nothing on my computer even showing an icon of a fish. Can you help me out?
